Design, Implementation & Feedback

Assessment Question Types *Skill* *Application* * “Stretch” *

“Stretch” Questions Unique problems Problems that call upon multiple concepts from current and/or previous math courses Intended to develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills

Developing and Implementing the Formative Assessment Multiple choice format Assigned for homework Collected results using a Google Form Sorted data before the next class Used results to focus review in class Assigned 2-3 days before scheduled summative assessment

October 2013 Assessments Listed in ascending order by summative assessment results, this graph compares corresponding student results.

First Formative Assessment Reflection Results did not help predict performance on summative assessment. Multiple choice answer choices helped direct student responses. Inaccurate feedback from formative assessment gave false sense of security.

Improvements for Second Formative Assessment Students given one copy without multiple choices to work from. Second copy provided with multiple choice answers for students to use AFTER they completed the assessment.

November 2013 Assessments Listed in ascending order by summative assessment results, this graph compares corresponding student results.

December 2013 Assessments Listed in ascending order by summative assessment results, this graph compares corresponding student results.

Overall Comparison October Assessments November Assessments December Assessments

Summative  Formative Students complete corrections which must be reviewed and signed by teacher Time Frame – one week Sign-up schedule posted on bulletin board Corrections require individual notes which will act as a study guide for final exam Counted as quiz grade

Overview I.Formative Assessment assigned as homework a)Completed and submitted without using resources b)Revisited with resources II.Results sorted and used for in-class review III.Review homework assigned – students choose 6 problems based on their individual results IV.Extra review sessions outside of class time a)Mandatory for students performing at or below 75% on formative assessment b)Optional for all other students V.Summative Assessment given VI.Corrections assigned (counted as quiz grade)

Student Feedback “It is a great tool for me personally to know where I am in the material. It also helps me get the jitters out before a test since I have an idea of what the test will be like.” “I think the formatives have allowed me to reflect back and remember what exactly was important in the chapter and what we really focused on. It acts as a refresher and really helps me prepare for tests and quizzes.” “With formative assessments I am able to practice a summary of the chapters and things that we have learned for the test and really pinpoint the things that I either do not understand, or need to work on. It also shows me some of the easy careless mistakes that I can make on things that I do understand. It helps me and is a great studying tool to prepare for tests.” “The formative assessment helped me connect the concepts I use in different types of questions. They also help me practice what the actual test will be like.” “I really enjoy formative assessments and I would like more of them.”

Pre-Assessments “We could possibly have a pre-formative assessment before a new unit to see what we already know from the new material we are going to learn. When we get back these results, we can have an idea on what to really focus on as we study new lessons in the chapter.” Next Year’s Goal
