BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU Record of School Achievement (RoSA)

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU What is the Record of School Achievement? ________________________________ The Record of School Achievement or RoSA is:  awarded to students who leave school after Year 10 and before completing the HSC  a cumulative credential – it records academic achievement up until the date a student leaves school  based on moderated, school-based assessments. The RoSA also includes the option to take voluntary Literacy and Numeracy tests.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU The Record of School Achievement ________________________________  Students who complete Year 10 courses and leave school prior to receiving their HSC will receive a Record of School Achievement (RoSA).  Students who are not eligible for the RoSA but leave school will receive a Transcript of Study.  Students who leave before the HSC and are eligible for a VET credential will receive this as part of their RoSA package.  A student who goes on to achieve their HSC will receive their Year 10 results along with their Year 11 and Year 12 results in an all-inclusive HSC Results Package.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU Who is likely to receive a RoSA? ________________________________ Each year approximately 60,000 students complete their Higher School Certificate (HSC) in NSW. A further 10,000 students will complete some Stage 6 study (Year 11 and 12) and leave before completing their HSC. About 13% of students leave school after completing only Years 7 to 10. Of this group of school leavers:  61% are male and 39% are female  72% are from government schools  57% are from regional areas. The RoSA is a cumulative credential for students who leave school before completing their HSC.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU RoSA reporting explained _______________________________ The big advantage of the RoSA is that it is cumulative. It shows a comprehensive record of academic achievement. This includes:  completed courses and the awarded grade  courses a student has participated in but did not complete before leaving school  the date the student leaves school.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU Students leaving school at the end of Year 10 – what will their RoSA look like? ________________________________ An A to E grade is provided for all courses (except VET and Life Skills) the student has satisfactorily completed. These grades are:  based on student achievement in their assessment work  submitted by the school to the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES) in Term 4  monitored for fairness and consistency by BOSTES.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU

Students leaving school at the end of Year 11 – what will their RoSA look like? _________________________________ For an eligible student leaving at the end of Year 11 – their RoSA credential will show A to E grades for completed Year 11 courses. The grades are:  based on school assessment tasks  monitored for fairness and consistency by BOSTES  submitted by the school to BOSTES in Term 4. The student’s Year 10 (Stage 5) achievements will be reported on the second page of their RoSA credential.`

What about Life Skills courses? _________________________________  Life Skills is a curriculum option for students with special education needs.  Students who leave school before completing their HSC, but who have successfully completed Year 11 or Year 10 Life Skills courses will be issued with a RoSA.  A more detailed report, called the Profile of Student Achievement, is included with the RoSA, giving students richer details of their achievements from each Life Skills course.

Literacy and Numeracy tests – why take them? ________________________________  The Literacy and Numeracy tests are for students who intend to leave school before the HSC exams and who want to receive a report on these skills for a potential employer or for further training.  The tests are designed to show an overview of a student’s level of achievement in the areas of literacy and numeracy.  The concepts of literacy and numeracy being tested have been drawn from the Australian Core Skills Framework and focus on the literacy and numeracy skills required by school leavers for employment and further education.  The tests are optional; ie, they are not required for the RoSA – they are reported separately.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU How do the Literacy and Numeracy tests work? ____________________________________  Students wanting to take the tests should tell their teacher so the school can enrol them.  There are two opportunities a year – in May and October.  Taking the tests does not mean the student has to leave.  The tests are taken on a computer at school.  There is one test for literacy and one test for numeracy.  Students are allowed up to 60 minutes per test.  Test reports show a mark out of 80 and are available via Students Online.

Requesting a RoSA credential ________________________________  Schools are responsible for requesting a RoSA.  This is requested through the BOSTES portal – Schools Online.  As part of the request process, schools should generate an eRecord and check the student’s course information is correctly recorded.  This eRecord can be used as an interim result report until the formal RoSA credential arrives at the student’s postal address.  At any time, all students in Years 11 and 12 can access an online eRecord to provide when seeking casual work.

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU RoSA Checklist for students ________________________________ Thinking of leaving school before the HSC? Have you … spoken to your Careers Advisor or Year Advisor to let them know? logged in to Students Online to check the results you have achieved so far? informed your school if you are interested in sitting the next Literacy and Numeracy tests? Decided to leave? Have you … spoken with your school to confirm the signing-out process? checked your school has placed a request for your RoSA credential with BOSTES, before you sign out? logged in to Students Online to make sure your postal address is correct? downloaded your eRecord from Students Online to use as an interim result report until your formal RoSA credential arrives at your home?

BOSTES.NSW.EDU.AU For more information ….. _______________________________  It is always best to start with the school as they know the student best.  For a general overview visit the BOSTES website – and search under Record of School Achievement (RoSA).  For teachers – subscribe to the BOSTES Bulletin.
