Who's the Greatest?

Unit Summary Students will conduct research and gather information/statistics about various athletes. These statistics will be placed in a chart/spreadsheet format and then manipulated to find key facts about the athletes overall production. Finally, students will rank the athletes according their findings and state who is the most efficient athlete.

Essential Question: "Who is the greatest!? How can you say that?"

Curriculum Framing Questions Essential Question: "Who is the Greatest?!" How can you say that?" Unit Questions: *How are athletes ranked? *What formulas are used to create statistics? Content Questions: *What are statistics? *How does order of operations affect accurate data results? *What types of graphs are most effective when comparing statistical data?

Assessment Timeline

Activities

Students will take collected data and create a Bar Graph

Sample Reflection: I believe that Eli Manning is the “greatest” quarterback because he has the most touchdowns thrown in the group. Also, he has 4,000 passing yards and a quarterback rating of Some information that is not included in the spreadsheet but affects my decision to choose Eli Manning include rushing yards, number of team wins, super bowl wins, etc. I think since Eli Manning has won two super bowls, he should be considered better than the other quarterbacks. Also, he can run around and avoid being tackled in the backfield. The spreadsheet does not show how many fumbles the quarterbacks have or mention if the team is good or bad. These are some factors that are missing from the data in the spreadsheet. If I had to draft a quarterback from college I would choose Geno Smith. His touchdown to interception ratio is 35/4 which is good for a quarterback. He has a quarterback rating of which could be better we used the nfl formula instead of the college formula. Through research I have had that Smith has 8 rushing touchdowns that do not count towards the quarterback rating. If they counted his td:int ratio would be 43/4 which is almost a ten to one ratio.
