Class Three GOAL SETTING AND PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT

Goals and Goal Setting:  Goals: The purpose toward which effort is directed –American Heritage College Dictionary  Goal-Setting: –The practice of developing and assigning goals to programs, services or activities, etc.

Performance Measurement:  The act of measuring ones performance on a particular task or activity  The act of measuring ones performance toward completing desired goals

Goal setting and performance measurement sequence of events: –Leader of the organization –Vision for the organization (global and/or broad) –Goals for the organization (specific period of time)

Goal setting and performance measurement sequence of events continued: –Plans for the organization (related to the desired goals) –Measurement of each goal –Outcomes (results of efforts to achieve ones goals) –Evaluation of outcomes

Goal statements should be:  Be expressed positively (no negative wording)  Be appropriate for the circumstance or situation or context  Be believable (no doubts, all factors are controllable); and  Be measurable and observable

Set SMART Goals  Conduct SMART goal training –Specific –Measurable –Achievable –Realistic –Time-phased
