Using the diagram below, answer the following questions and then check your answers. Keep this diagram in your notes because you will be responsible for knowing its contents. What do the C,, T, G and A stand for in the diagram? What is the name of the sugar in the sugar-phosphate backbone?

The diagram on the top shows a nucleotide. The diagram on the bottom shows the four different DNA nucleotides. Use these to answer the following. Define a nucleotide in your notebook. When finished Check your answer. Which part of a nucleotide gives the nucleotide its name?

Each gene has the instructions for making one protein. The genes in a chromosome are wrapped around protein molecules for organization. Define the terms gene and chromosome in your notebook. Then check your answers.
