Communicating Information: Web Design

Inside the family Think of all the rooms in the school where there are computers. Most of these (and in some schools all of these) are connected together to one main computer – the server. This type of setup is called a Local Area Network (LAN). Your web site can have a “site” on the server and stay within the school network. This way your web site will be posted on an Intranet – it can only be accessed from any of the computers inside the school – those on the LAN.

Within a school

Venturing outside Anyone who has access to the Internet subscribes (pays a fee) to an Internet Service Provider – an ISP. The ISP provides the customer with Internet access. ISP providers are then connected to bigger organizations, which in turn are connected to even bigger ones. This continues so that there is a whole world of networks connected to networks, giving us the Internet. When your web site is completed it is uploaded to a site provided by the ISP and your site is published on the World Wide Web. Anybody in the world can access your site from a computer, providing their computer has Internet access.

Outside an organization

You are responsible Just as an author is responsible for the contents of a book, you are responsible for the contents of the web site that you design. There are certain rules which have to be followed when publishing a web site, to ensure that you have abided by the standard ways of working.

Summary When a web site is placed on a LAN it is on an Intranet and can only be accessed from inside an organization. When a web site is uploaded on a site provided by an ISP it is placed on the Internet. This way the site can be accessed from anywhere in the world. When designing a web site the author is responsible for the contents of the web pages within the site. A web site must never contain anything which could be offensive or untrue. All sources of information must be acknowledged and credit given to the original author. What can I remember?
