RINSE AND RETURN RECYCLING PROGRAM  This program is conducted in cooperation with the Ag Container Recycling Council, The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, and local Agri-businesses.  This program has been recycling pesticide containers for 20+ years.  To date Kentucky has recycled 1.5 million pounds of plastic through this program.  The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of pesticide containers that enter the landfill or are being disposed of by other undesirable means.

HOW THE RINSE AND RETURN RECYCLING PROGRAM WORKS  We contact the local Cooperative Extension Office and agribusinesses  We set up collection dates at locations that volunteer to host.  The schedule is posted to the KDA website and at local businesses.  On the date of collection a KDA representative and local volunteers inspect containers that are brought in by agricultural producers and pesticide applicators  After the collection season has ended KDA bags or bales the containers for shipping.  These containers are then recycled at approved facilities and made into approved end products.

CONTAINER ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS  Eligible  Rigid high density polyethylene (HDPE), 55 gallons and smaller, that previously held products utilized in the following markets:  Crop Protection – Containers that held EPA registered crop protection products labeled for agricultural uses. Containers that previously held non- registered products such as adjuvants, crop oils and surfactants are also eligible for recycling.  Specialty Pesticides and Fertilizers – Containers that held EPA registered products labeled for professional Structural Pest Control, Animal Health, Turf and Ornamental, Vegetation Management, Nursery and Greenhouse, Forestry, Aquatics, and Public Health uses are eligible for recycling, Containers that previously held non-registered products such as adjuvants, crop oils and surfactants are also eligible for pick up.  Pest Control Operators, Structural Pest Control – Containers that held EPA registered products labeled for professional application.

CONTAINER ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS  Not Eligible  Any container constructed of anything other than HDPE, rotationally molded containers, mini-bulk, intermediate bulk containers (IBC), totes, and all containers that previously held products utilized in the following markets:  Consumer Home & Garden, Pest Control and Swimming Pool Maintenance – Containers that previously held products labeled for consumer use in households, lawn and garden, and swimming pool uses are not eligible for recycling in the ACRC program.

CONTAINER RINSING  Why is rinsing important?  It is required by law.  It improves the return on your investment.  Properly rinsed containers are classified as clean, solid waste  Two ways to properly rinse your containers  Triple Rinsing  Pressure Rinsing  Remove Lid and Label Sleeve

APPROVED END USE PRODUCTS  The Containers will be utilized in such a way that any residues on or in the resin will have no real or perceived adverse affect on the environment or the user.  Approved End Use Products are currently  Agriculture drain pipe  Highway sign posts  Highway and agricultural fence posts  Underground utility conduit  Wire and cable spool (reel) flanges  Agro chemical composite IBC platforms

AG CHEMICAL COLLECTION PROGRAM  KDA currently has 4 Field Staff that have been trained to collect unwanted/unused ag chemicals  This is a service available to non-commercial individuals.  We will not collect chemicals from commercial pesticide application businesses or retailers  We only collect ag chemical and adjuvants.  We are not able to collect household use products. *There is no cost to participate in this program*

HOW TO PARTICIPATE  Individuals interested in participating in this program can contact the office  We come to the location of the chemical and properly overpack and transport the unwanted chemical.  All collected chemical are then sent to an approved Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility  This year we have collected 55,000 pounds of unwanted pesticides. This is the largest amount of chemical in the program’s history.
