To stay safe... you have to know that there are bad people out in the world. you have to know that you don’t know who you are texting if they text you first. you have to know that if they send a bad or nasty text don’t delete it keep it as evidence, so they can be found and punished.

Sharing info Never share info to someone you do not know. They could find more about you and could find you. Always use your nickname on a social media site. It is not ok to take a picture of yourself so they know what you look like. Make sure you have appropriate privacy settings on any social media site that you are a member of.

Age limits on social media sites – Do NOT use if under the minimum age

If you are on a social media site… Make sure your parents know Do not post anything inappropriate Have a secure password Do not meet anyone who you do not know in real life Make sure someone you don’t know is not following you, and make sure you do not follow them. Make sure your user name is your nickname, not your real name.

Internet bullying / cyberstalking Report all instances of cyber bullying and cyber stalking to parents and the social media site Never bully anyone else on the internet – It is AGAINST THE LAW as well as the distress it causes to people

Digital footprint If you type in something on your computer it is there forever and there will always be a trace of what you have written. If you apply for a job as a teacher or a doctor they will do an internet search on your name.

You should never share personal information with people that you’ve never met in person before. It’s ok to put your first name in a username because that doesn’t narrow down the options very much. You shouldn’t share these following things: your address, what school you go to, your age, your surname, your telephone number and your email address. Make sure you also don’t give away personal information in a picture. Personal Information

On social media, you have the option to make your account private so that only your friends can see what you’ve posted. Once your account is private , you can judge who can become your “friend.” Privacy Settings

If somebody ever offends you or swears at you online you have to make sure that you tell your parents or somebody older than you that you can trust. On online games and social media, there is a button that you can press that reports the abuse that you received to the website and the person that abused you gets punished. Report abuse

If somebody you don’t know is trying to talk to you and repeatedly trying to friend/follow you, you can block them. Blocking people stops them from talking to you and friend/follow you. Block people

When you post on social media, it stays there forever, even if you press delete. You have to be careful about what you post because when you’re older and you want to apply for a job, the company/business employing you, will check you’re social media. Posts stay forever

For social media, there are age restrictions, but many people ignore these. To go on Facebook, you must be 13 or over but 52% of 8-16 year olds in a recent survey go on Facebook. In the same survey 40% of 8-16 year olds go on WhatsApp. WhatsApp’s age restriction is 16 and over. The age restriction for SnapChat is also 16 but 11% of the children go on it. The study also found out that 59% of the children went on at least one social networking site by the age of 10. Age Restrictions

Don’t share personal information If you have any online websites like Facebook, Snap Chat, Twitter, Instagram etc - make sure that you do not put too much personal information of yourself. If you do, people all over the world can track you down and they can easily take your personal identity and use at theirs.

Key Things Not to do online There are many not so good things that people do online, like sending unsuitable pictures online and even worse tempting others to do the same. Before you get an app, you always must discuss it with your parents and if they agree that you are allowed to go on it- after checking all the important information, like age rates and other info and they still agree, then you can.

Never trust anyone If you like to talk to people on the internet while playing games, then make sure that you are safe. Some people may want to meet at one point and they may claim that they are the same age as you when they actually aren’t. You can never trust anyone unless you have met them in person and actually know what they are really like.

Think before you send You are just about to send something really mean to someone you may or may not know. This makes you feel happy to make others feel weak and sad but stop for a moment and think how much this will upset them.

Being Safe Being safe is very important and if you find something that you are uncomfortable with, then make sure you tell an adult and make sue that you do not go on it again.

TELL YOUR PARENTS! IF ANYTHING BOTHERS YOU ONLINE, TELL YOUR PARENT OR TEACHER. DON’T DELETE ANYTHING AS YOU CAN USE IT AS EVIDENCE. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PARENTS KNOW ALL OF YOUR PASSWORDS, THEY NEED TO CHECK UP ON YOU UNTIL YOU’RE 18. CHECK WITH YOUR PARENTS BEFORE YOU JOIN ANY KIND OF SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITES!

WHAT NOT TO DO DON’T POST HURTFUL COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. DON’T SHARE YOUR PASSWORDS WITH OTHERS, THE ONLY ONES WHO SHOULD KNOW THEM ARE YOU AND YOUR PARENTS. NEVER SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION (E.G. FULL NAME OR ADDRESS). DON’T OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU KNOW THAT THEY ARE SAFE. DON’T GO ON AGE INAPPROPRIATE SITES OR GAMES.

CYBER-BULLYING YOU SHOULDN’T STAND FOR IT… IF ANYONE IS CONSTANTLY BEING HORRIBLE TO YOU ONLINE, TELL SOMEONE. PEOPLE SOMETIMES SAY MEAN THINGS, ONCE ISN’T BULLYING, BUT OVER AND OVER IS. CYBER-BULLYING CAN COME IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS (E.G. TEXTING OR EMAILING THREATS OR HURTFUL COMMENTS). IF IT IS HAPPENING, DON’T LET THE BULLIES GET TO YOU. THEY MIGHT BE MAKING YOU UPSET BECAUSE IT’S MAKING THEM FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES, OR THEY MIGHT JUST BE JEALOUS OF YOU!

TELL YOUR PARENTS IF ANYTHING IS BOTHERING YOU ONLINE. TO BE E-SAFE… REMEMBER TELL YOUR PARENTS IF ANYTHING IS BOTHERING YOU ONLINE. DON’T TELL OTHER PEOPLE YOUR PASSWORDS. CHECK BEFORE GOING ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
