Presentation transcript:

We’ll be spending minutes talking about Quiz 1 that you’ll be taking at the next class session before you take the Gateway Quiz today.

Quiz 1 covers sections 1.2 through questions; 50 minute time limit Taken in class, but via the online course web site with lockdown browser Worth 60 points 1 attempt No calculators allowed Practice Quiz 1 should be taken at least 2-3 times before the quiz day: 15 questions; 50 minute time limit; can take it anywhere Worth 6 points Unlimited attempts, only best score counts Each time you take it, you will get a different set of questions, so the more times you take it, the more chances you’ll have of seeing all the types of questions that might be on the real quiz. Don’t use a calculator, since you can’t on the real quiz. REMEMBER: Come to the open lab in 203 if you need help. M – Th: 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Reviewing for Quiz 1

IMPORTANT: Be on time so you’re logged in and ready to go when I give you the password. Bring your –POWER CORD –PENCILS SHOW ALL OF YOUR WORK on the answer/worksheet provided so that we can award partial credit for partially correct work or typos.

Preparing for the Quiz: 1. Review the homework from all five Chapter 1 homework assignments using the “Gradebook” function: –Click on the “Gradebook” menu button –Go to desired HW section, select “Review You can review homework problems even after the deadline has passed. This is a great way to study for quiz, since all problems on the quiz and practice quiz will have been selected from the homework assignments,

Preparing for the Quiz: 2). Take the Practice Quiz (under Quizzes and Tests, Practice Quiz 1). The practice quiz has the same number of problems as the real quiz, and has similar problems and will give you a chance to see the difference between doing problems in a homework setting vs. a timed quiz with no “help” or “check answer” functions. Each time you take the practice quiz you’ll get a different set of questions (not just different numbers in the same questions), so taking it multiple times will make it more likely that you’ll have seem most of the types of problems that will be an the actual quiz. 3). Review your daily class notes and/or the online lecture slides (under “Course Home” Link to Math 010 course Materials ).

–You can take the practice quiz as many times as you want, and the computer will generate new problems for you each time. –You don’t need a password to access the practice versions of tests and quizzes. –Your best practice quiz score WILL count a small percentage in your overall course grade. –After each try, you can review your quiz and see how to do the problems you got wrong. (Come to the open lab if you need help.)

Practice Test Tries Average Test Score Grade number of students 061 F C C A- 7 Why you should take advantage of the opportunity to take the practice versions of quizzes and tests:

Why you should keep taking the practice quiz until you can score at least 90%: (almost a C-) (low F) (B+) (A)

REMINDERS: Take the practice quiz early enough so you’ll have time to review it, retake it, come into the open lab for help if needed. Review each practice quiz after you submit it. (The “help me solve this” buttons will appear when you review the quiz) You have unlimited attempts, so retake the practice quiz until you score at least 90% If you score < 90%, come into the open lab to review your quiz with a TA. (Or just take the practice quiz in the open lab to start with …)

Do any of you who have already started the Practice Quiz 1 have any questions you’d like to have explained? (There will also be a few minutes to ask questions on this at the next class session before we start the quiz.)

On to the Gateway Quiz: No calculators of any type are allowed on this quiz. Please turn off and put away cell phones. Show your work on the worksheet provided, and write the exact problem you see online in the box provided on the worksheet. Type your answer into the answer box on the computer as well as writing it on your paper worksheet. When finished, turn in your worksheet and then you’re done for today. REMINDER: Make sure you take Practice Quiz 1 at least once or twice before the next class period!

To access the Gateway Quiz: In the Quizzes & Tests, click on the “Gateway Quiz” item. Enter the password (on whiteboard) Then click “I am ready to start”

When finished, turn in your worksheet and then you’re done for today. REMINDER: Make sure you take Practice Quiz 1 at least once or twice before the next class period!
