Your lead teacher worked with our education staff and arranged for a guided tour. Each tour takes about an hour. You won’t be able to see it all on a tour. Your teachers might have arranged for additional time to explore more of the museum and, maybe, do an assignment.

What will you see and talk about? All tours are different so you could see examples of our Western Art, Contemporary art, and Native American fine art and cultural objects. We do rotate pieces so you’ll see that something is different each time you visit. We also have an education collection with hands-on materials. If you’re touring with a group, you’ll be greeted by your volunteer guide outside the building or when you walk in.

Your leader was sent a confirmation form (see below). We are always available to take your calls if you have any questions about your upcoming tour; information about guides and other essentials for your visit will be confirmed closer to your tour date.

Make sure you check your large items or bags at the admissions desk. There are no food, drinks, backpacks or umbrellas allowed in the museum galleries… …however you may put any items you bring with you in our designated bag check-in area.

Please bring lunches in large boxes or coolers for easy transport. We’ll keep them safe until you and your group have lunch.

What should the adult chaperones do? The adults have a job; they stay with the group and keep the group together with the guide. They know this is a class time and let the students ask and answer questions. If needed an adult will stay with a student and take someone to the restroom or outside while the group continues their tour. All phones and electronic devices should be silent during the tour. Adult chaperones may should use their phones only in an emergency.

While touring the museum, make sure your groups stay with their chaperones at all times so they don’t get lost or wander off on their own.

Art is fragile and in order to preserve it we mustn’t touch it with our hands because we could harm the artwork. While in the galleries you should stay an arms length away from an artwork, unless a guide tells you otherwise. Guides will share objects that can be touched.

Do you want to take photos? While it is fun to take photos of the gallery art, we ask that you avoid taking pictures while on a tour as it can be a distraction to the students and guides. There are great places for camera moments that groups can visit when the tour is over.

We need to know if you plan to stay after your guided tour. Also, if you plan on doing an assignment, please arrange to do so after the tour. If you will be writing in the galleries, please bring clipboards and pencils to use. Ink pens are not allowed in the galleries.

If your teacher has a Treasure Hunt planned or wants you to check out the special exhibition, the Resource Center, or visit the R.B. Annis Western Family Experience they need to make arrangements before you arrive.

What will you all be doing on tour? It depends on the type of tour your teacher arranged. We hope you know at the end of your tour… TThere is no one American Indian tribe. NNative peoples are still here. TThe West is more than a place and many artists have worked to define what the West is. CContemporary art can be fun to discuss and often has several layers of meaning. YYou’ll want to return and visit again.
