FRANÇAIS 2E OBJECT PRONOUNS How to go from: – I’m giving the pen to Jean. Je donne le stylo à Jean. – I’m giving it (the pen) to Jean. Je le donne à Jean. – I’m it (the pen) to him (to Jean). Je le lui donne.

Direct Objects (DO)—what are they? Direct objects receive the action of the verb: I’m watching the movie. (What am I watching? The movie=the direct object.) He’s closing the window. (What’s he closing? The window=the DO) We’re writing letters. (What’re we writing? letters=the DO) You’re giving flowers. (You’re giving what? Flowers=the DO)

Object Pronouns en français Let’s talk direct objects en français. Agreement: Nouns can be masculine/feminine/singular/plural, right? So….en français….we have to match nouns w/pronouns for number and gender. Masculinele (l’)Masc. Plural les Femininela (l’)Fem. Plural les

Position….where do DO’s and IO’s (Indirect Objects) go? BEFORE THE VERB! THEN….consider ne…pas, our verb sandwich. – bread—cheese—ham—bread, right? Subject ne…DO/IO…verb…pas… Je ne la donne pas. *In the PC, TREAT THE AUXILIARY! (avoir or être) Je ne l’ai pas donné.

In our previous examples… I’m watching the movie. Je regarde le film. Le film=masculine singular=le. Je le regarde. He’s closing the window. Il ferme la fenêtre. La fenêtre=fem. sing.=la. Je la ferme. We’re writing letters. Nous écrivons les lettres. Les lettres=fem.pl.=les. Nous les écrivons. You’re giving flowers. Vous donnez les fleurs. Les fleurs=fem.pl.=les. Vous les donnez.

So……in the negative (verb sandwich, now with DO/IO’s) Je NE le regarde PAS. Il NE la ferme PAS. Nous NE les écrivons PAS. Vous NE les donnez PAS.

WHAT ABOUT IF PEOPLE ARE OBJECTS? Whoa! People as OBJECTS??? C’est possible?? OUI! TU ME REGARDES??? (You lookin’ at ME?) JE TE PARLE!!!! (I’m talkin’ to YOU!)

But….now we’re talking about INDIRECT OBJECTS: This is what you need to know: Me=me, to me Te=you, to you (familiar) Nous=us, to us Vous=you, to you (formal/plural) Lui=to him or to her Leur=to them

The “penant” rule This is the order of object pronouns… Me Tele/la/l’luiyen Nouslesleur Vous

Some examples with multiple objects. I’m giving the flowers to my mom. I’m giving them to my mom. I’m giving them to her. En français: Je donne les fleurs à ma mère. Je les donne à ma mère. Je les lui donne.

Answer using object pronouns. Tu invites ton copain? _________________ Ils ont demandé à la prof? ________________ Nous regardons le tableau? _____________
