Section 24.1 Basic Needs and Safety Caregivers must meet the basic needs of children and keep children safe. It is important to know how to handle emergencies when they occur. Parents must choose child care services carefully. 2

Meeting Children’s Basic Needs Parents are the primary caregivers of a child. Parenting is the process of caring for children and helping them grow and develop. caregivers Anyone who takes care of a child. parenting The process of caring for children and helping them grow and develop.

Meeting Children’s Basic Needs Physical needs are the most basic responsibility of parenting, including providing food, sleep, clothing, cleanliness, and health care. Why is it important that all of a child’s physical needs be fulfilled? 5

Keeping Children Safe To keep children safe, caregivers must know what to expect in any situation and take precautions. It is important to choose age-appropriate activities for children. age-appropriate Suitable for the age and developmental needs of a child. 6

Dealing With Emergencies To handle an emergency, remain calm, assess the situation, call for assistance, and give first aid. Learn the basic emergency procedures to perform in order to give immediate action. first aid Emergency care or treatment given right away to an ill or injured person. 8

Choosing Child Care Services There are various reasons for using child care services. The options can be in-home care, family child care, child care centers, or before- and after-school care. 9

Nurturing Children Caregivers must provide for children’s intellectual, emotional, social, and moral needs. Children who feel loved have greater strength and resiliency, the ability to overcome disappointments, and stress. What are some ways to help a child feel loved, safe, and secure?

Guide Behavior Caregivers need to give guidance so children can learn what behavior is expected of them. Rules for good behavior must be reliable and stable. guidance Using firmness and understanding to help children learn how to behave.

Guide Behavior Modeling good behavior is the best way to promote it in children. Children need to know what their limits are and what is expected of them. Children should not be punished for actions that they have not been told are wrong or for those they cannot help.

Guide Behavior Handle misbehavior by redirecting it, giving reminders, removing the child from the situation, making the punishment appropriate. Enforce consequences.

Learning Through Play Play provides opportunities for children to explore and learn about their world. Types of play are quiet play, free play, and active play. quiet play Activities that engage the mind and use small motor skills. free play A type of play during which children choose any safe activity they want. active play Physical activities that use large motor skills.

Learning Through Play Provide opportunities to make learning fun and become involved in children’s play. Make the most of what television and electronic games can offer children. Set guidelines regarding active play and electronic entertainment.
