Section 35.1 Transportation Options There are many different transportation options. Owning a vehicle involves more costs than just the price of the car. 2

Transportation Options Compare costs and convenience when deciding how to get to work or school. Mass transit, or public transportation carries large numbers of people. mass transit A transportation system designed to carry large numbers of people. 4

Transportation Options Benefits of mass transit include less cost, time saving, stress reducing, traffic reducing, energy saving, and pollution reducing. Personal vehicles offer greater flexibility, and may be the only option if no mass transit is available. 5

Transportation Options Disadvantages to using your own vehicle include more costly, more time consuming, and more stressful. Other transportation options include sharing a vehicle, bicycling, or walking. 6

Getting Your Own Vehicle Costs of owning your own vehicle include costs of vehicle, insurance, fuel, parking, and tolls, and maintenance and repairs. Most people make a down payment on a car and take out a loan for the rest. 7

Getting Your Own Vehicle When you pay off your loan you receive the title, the legal document that states you own the vehicle Leasing involves paying a monthly fee in exchange for the exclusive use of a vehicle for a specific length of time. title A legal document showing ownership. 8

Section 35.2 Vehicle Ownership To get the best deal on a car, you must first do research. Auto insurance and car maintenance are two ownership responsibilities. 9

Insurance companies base rates on statistics. 15

Maintaining Your Vehicle Maintaining your vehicle ensures a longer life and less repairs. Read your owner’s manual and follow manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance. 16

Maintaining Your Vehicle First a reliable service facility to perform some of the maintenance tasks, but learn to do the basic ones yourself. Heed warning lights and watch for leaks, strange noises, and how your vehicle performs before a problem gets worse. 17
