Working hours and access procedures Access to the department is allowed from to 23.00, except when the College is closed. The College closes on Christmas day and New Year’s day. The doors are open between and 17.30, outside these times and during the undergraduate vacations i.e. Christmas, Easter and summer vacations, access is by swipe-card only. Anyone working alone, particularly in the laboratories, should ensure that someone is within call in case you have an accident or become ill.
First aid arrangements DURING NORMAL WORKING HOURS ( Monday to Friday) Contact your area first aider Names of first aiders can be found on each corridor usually opposite the lifts. OR telephone the Health Centre on extension or on a mobile ring OUT of HOURS: contact Sherfield Security on extension or Blood Spillage: In the event of a spillage of blood do not attempt to clean it up. Contact a first aider who will be aware of the correct procedure
Reporting Accidents and near misses All accidents or near misses, however minor, must be reported to the Departmental Safety Officer or her deputy. Details of the incidents should be set down on the College’s form for reporting an accident, a near miss or occupational ill health.
Emergency Numbers IN AN EMERGENCY RING: 4444 from any internal phone or from a mobile phone Define the location of the incident by road (e.g. Prince Consort Road), building name (e.g. Roderic Hill, Bone or ACE extension) and room number.
Safety Department The role of the Safety Department is to ensure that: the College provides a safe working environment for all staff, students and visitors all College activities are undertaken in a safe manner, and the College complies with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and other relevant legislation In undertaking this role, the Safety Department: provides expert advice on safety matters to the College develops policies on safety issues and prepares codes of practice and guidance notes as appropriatepoliciescodes of practice and guidance notes auditsaudits compliance with College safety policies & national standards investigates accidents and near misses accidents and near misses liaises with statutory authorities runs a safety training programme and provides advice on specialist needssafety training programme advises on environmental monitoring
Occupational Health Occupational Health www3.imperial.ac.uk/occhealth provides services to protect health, assess and advise on fitness for work and to ensure that health issues are effectively managed. The service is based at the College's South Kensington Campus. You will find the Safety Department and Occupational Health in the Sherfield Building.

Hazards and Risk Assessments Hazards within the Department include: chemicals, gases, pressure vessels, manual handling, use of computers etc. Risk assessments must be carried out and any control measures identified before work starts. Any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required will be provided by the Department, this includes safety glasses, lab coats and hard hats
Additional training Undergraduates must attend a laboratory safety course before working in the labs or pilot plant. Postgraduates and staff will have their training needs assessed by their supervisor. The Learning and Development Centre provides a large variety of safety related courses run by the Safety Department to cover most training needs.
