MIDYIS – A BRIEF INTRODUCTION Graeme Deuchars Vice Principal West Island School

MidYIS Middle Years Information System Run by Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring Part of Durham University, UK Assess 50% of UK schools & many international overseas schools 1.3 million students per year assessed 250,000 student per year do MidYIS

MidYIS – What is it ? Online assessment that takes around 1 hour Assessment adapts to meet student abilities Measures “acquired / developed ability” rather than the taught curriculum No preparation required (or desirable!)

MidYIS – What do we do with it? Information for subject teachers and tutors to support learners in the classroom Data to help provide additional information to support target setting and progress monitoring for students. This is an aid rather than a replacement for teacher judgement Highlights specific strengths and areas of weakness

MidYIS – What Does it Include? Vocabulary assessment Maths assessment Non-verbal: 3D & Spatial Awareness Skills: proof reading perceptual speed and accuracy (PSA)

Understanding the Data

An example Individual Pupil Record (or IPR) In the next few days you will receive a document by post showing the MIDYIS scores for your child. The assessment was taken earlier this term. The following notes explain (in basic terms) how to interpret this Individual Pupil Record (or IPR for short)

MidYIS – Individual Pupil Records A. Basic Results shown in 4 different ways This is what an Individual Pupil Record (IPR) looks like …….. B. Chart showing Standardised Scores

Let’s look at The Basic Results

MidYIS – The Basic Results … The data from the test is shown in 4 different ways; Band, Stanine, Percentile and Standard Score. We will use Standard Score for this presentation as it is probably the most useful measure. So we can see that this student scored 98 for vocabulary, 90 for Maths, 107 for non-verbal (3D & Spatial Awareness) and 121 for skills (proof reading abilities) and an overall MidYIS score of 93. The range of (standardised) scores goes from a minimum score of 50 to a maximum score of 150 with the average always set @100.

Now let’s look at The IPR Graph

MidYIS – The IPR Graph Explained 150 is the maximum possible score The small diamond represents the pupils actual score for this item 100 is the average for the range of scores (scores go from 50 to 150) 50 is the minimum possible score The bars extending from the student score (the diamond) indicate that If the pupil took the same test multiple times then statistically the result would fall into this range 95 times out of 100 times – this is referred to as the 95% confidence band.

Finally ….

MidYIS – Important Points ! The assessment results are a potential starting point for future conversations between teachers, students and parents as the student progresses through the school …. other factors such as student attitude and teacher inputs are equally, if not more important … Email either Mike Waller (Head of Lower School) on michael.waller@wis.edu.hk or Graeme Deuchars (Vice Principal) on graeme.deuchars@wis.edu.hk if you have any questions.perceptual speed and accuracy (PSA)
