Where should I get information from? A game about Little Timmy’s adventure on the Internet. Let’s get started

This is Little Timmy Little Timmy has a research project to do for school! Do you want to help him find the best information possible? Yeah! Let’s help Timmy! Yeah! Let’s help Timmy! Nah, I’d rather not. Nah, I’d rather not.

Are you sure? If you don’t help little Timmy, he will be sad and he won’t succeed with his project! OK, I’ll help Timmy! OK, I’ll help Timmy! Let Timmy fail! Let Timmy fail! If Timmy is sad, I’ll be sad too!

OK great! Timmy is all ready to search for information on the Internet. But there is so much out there for him! What should he do? Search Google right away Search Google right away Narrow the topic first Narrow the topic first Look in Wikipedia Look in Wikipedia Search a research database Search a research database

Information overload! You searched Google for what you wanted, but was faced with too many varied results. Timmy is now confused. Go back

Your search returned zero results Research databases are a great place to go for information, but your search term is too broad. You’ll have to narrow it down first. Narrow the topic Narrow the topic

Not a bad option! Starting your search on Wikipedia is actually a very good idea because it will give you a nice overview of your topic. Don’t rely on it to do your research though, you’ll have to be a little more advanced until you can do that. Let’s keep researching! Let’s keep researching!

Good choice! Narrowing down your topic prior to searching for it will help you find information faster and more efficiently. Now, where should Timmy search for information about his topic? Keep searching the Internet Keep searching the Internet The Library

Timmy has Web Fatigue! You’re doing lots of searching on Google but nothing quite seems to be the type of information you want. Get help at the Library Get help at the Library Stick to Google Stick to Google

The Library is a great place to go! While a computer is a great place to start, going to the Library will help you seek out additional resources and get help from people who are very good at finding information. Keep going

In which kinds of places should Timmy look? The Librarian has helped Timmy a lot to narrow down his topic and has given him handy search terms for several online databases. Click on a picture on the left that you think is an online database.

This is not a database Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that may link you to useful resources, but cannot be used alone for research. Google is only a search engine, and won’t be as good as a dedicated online research database. Go back

Ask Who? Ask Jeeves, or just ask.com, is not only old and outdated, it’s not an online database. Go back I offered answers back in the day of shotgun modems and IDSN!

Ding Ding Ding! That’s right! You know your databases well! You’re almost ready to start writing your research paper now. Keep going

Oh no! What should Timmy do? While you’re surfing around for useful information, you’re faced with a message like this on a website. How should you proceed? Proceed to the website Proceed to the website Click the “Back” button on the browser Click the “Back” button on the browser

Phew! You avoided that one! Messages about malicious content should be taken seriously. If you’re not sure what to do, ask an older friend, a teacher, or librarian. Going to the wrong types of websites can harm your computer. Keep going

Timmy’s computer now has a virus! Guess you shouldn’t have gone to that website huh? Messages about malicious content should be taken seriously. If you’re not sure what to do, ask an older friend, a teacher, or librarian. Going to the wrong types of websites can harm your computer. Start over

Timmy has failed! You didn’t help him and now Timmy has done poorly on his research project. Start over

Timmy is too tired! You wore out Timmy on the Internet and now he’s cooked! Start over

Timmy has successfully found his information! Good job! Now Timmy is all ready to write a paper about his topic. He has learned how to research well and the value of going to The Library.
