Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Overview L ab Work: Not about right or wrong way Because Photoshop is a powerful computer software, there are always many ways to get-to-the-same ultimate solution. Remember the mantra of ‘keeping it simple’. Limit your basic image manipulation to: 1.Levels adjustment 2.Brightness/Contrast adjustment 3.Color adjustment Get use to doing the 3 adjustments before venturing into new adjustment territory. And stay away from using curves.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Avoid T hree Sins: Sin 1 – Thinking that ‘I’ll fix it in Photoshop’. Sin 2 – Thinking that ‘I’ll crop it right in Photoshop’. Sin 3 – Thinking that I don’t care if people understand my art. Repeat: Stay away from using Curves…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Standard Procedure B asic Lab Work: Normal looking image Step 1:Create a New ‘cropFrame’ Layer and add the crop-to-shape as needed before any image adjustment work is done. Step 2:Apply ‘Auto’ Levels adjustment first. Step 2:Apply Brightness/Contrast adjustment as needed. Step 3:Apply Color Balance adjustment usually last. If no adjustment is needed, finalize it without changes but name it ‘no change’.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Alternate procedure W eird Color: Step 1:Add the New ‘cropFrame’ Layer and crop as needed. Step 2:Apply Color (correction) Balance adjustment first. Step 2:Then follow that with the ‘Auto’ Levels adjustment. Custom moves might be required. Step 3:Serious Brightness/Contrast adjustments are usually required when the color is weird to start with. This situation can easily be avoided by using a single source of light. And making certain that source is the assignment recommended Skylight.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Photoshop information L ayers: Palette choice This particular palette has Layers, Channels, and Paths as tab selection options. The current selection is Layers. With the actions taken so far, your palette should look like the example shwon to the right. ‘cropFrame’ layer at the top followed by the 3 basic adjustment layers Color Balance, Brightness/ Contrast, and Levels at the bottom.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Photoshop information P alette Controls: 1 of 2 The only real image is at the bottom layer with the name ‘Background’. All other layers are filters above the image changing it this way or that way. They can all be turned off to view the camera original image. Turn off any layer by clicking on the eye-ball. I often rename ‘Background’ to ‘orig’ for camera original.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Lab Work: Photoshop information P alette Controls: 2 of 3 Any layer can be made transparent by adjusting Opacity percentage. Making the opacity ‘0’ would be the same as turning the layer off by clicking on the eye-ball. Any layer can be deleted by moving it to the Trashcan. And a New Layer can be created by clicking on the New Layer icon. The adjustment layers made their own layers automatically.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Mac & Camera: Conclusion Summary: This was only meant as a quick introductory information only show. I do not expect you to commit any of this to memory. I will be getting more into Photoshop by mid term. And you will be getting a more hands on walk through before you are expected to use it on your assignment images.
