Linguistic Atelier – military English courses Military English exam - speaking strategy

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses At a prompt card you are given only some buzz words/data you are required to ask about, so…  try to build up the correct sentences which would address the issues you’ll be discussing;  try to say each possibly usefull sentence in your mind prior to actual conversation with the examiner;  try to predict examiner’s answers and figure out what follow-on questions/comments you might use as a response;

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses What will you achive through this mental preparation?

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses What will you achive through this mental preparation? you will revise required grammar constructions/tenses before your turn comes; you will memorise items to ask about – nothing will be missed when the right moment comes; you will set up your mind for asking and interactions in general; How long you were have you been to France?

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses What will you achive through this mental preparation? you will be prepared to quickly produce the right sentences; neither sentence, nor phrase will surprise you your response time will be shorter so the whole conversation will be more smooth I couldn’t agree with you more. That’s true but… How much do I have to pay extra?

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses What will you achive through this mental preparation? you will shorten your response time showing your quick comprehension of the subject; you will improve a degree of interaction; you will seem to be more involved and engage your interlocutors more likely transport car train bus family return one way

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses Too general hints? Let’s move to more details of this particular exam set: You are at a travel agency in London. You have read their advertisement for a last-minute holiday in Egypt. You are interested in it but you need more information. The examiner is a travel agent. Ask about:- date - accommodation - price – what in it? - discounts for children - meals – how many? - place and time of departure - insurance – extra pay? Decide on one hotel and book the holiday for your family. The examiner speaks first, “Good morning. What can I do for you?"

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses First of all, you will be talking about future trip, so think about fixed phrases and tenses which may describe future:  Future Simple: „Will there be any security assigned to our group?”  Going to : „I’m going to consult it with my wife.”  Present Continuous: „I’m taking some days off next month.”  I conditional: „If you give me a special family discount, I’ll take that trip to Egypt.”

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses Make a good impression from the beginning. A swift introductory sentence will work a dream, e.g.  Good afternoon. What a lovely day is today. The perfect time to talk about a sunny holiday, e.g. in Egypt. I’ve read you have such a holiday in your offer, right?  Good morning, I’m so excited about my holiday. I’ve read about one in Egypt you orginize. Can you give me some details about it?

Linguistic Atelier – military English courses While discussing required details, try to use multiple synonyms/desriptive phrases/collocating expressions, showing that your vocabulary is rich & well developed, e.g. pleasurable enjoyable lovely likeable great good price discounts Special offers due amount paid in advance to pay in instalments deductions reductions sales cut post-seasonfamily tickets group booking
