Quotations Rule #1 Use quotation marks (“ “) to enclose a direct quotation- a person’s exact words. Example: Melanie said, “This car is making a very strange noise.” – Do NOT use quotation marks for indirect quotations. Example: Stephanie said that she was going to wash the car. [The speaker does not quote Stephanie’s exact words.] Always be sure to place quotation marks at both the beginning and the end of the quote. When 2 or more sentences by the same speaker are quoted together, use only one set of quotation marks. – A direct quote begins with a capital letter. Miss Smith answered, “The rest of the chapter, of course.” – When a quoted sentence is divided into 2 parts by an interrupting expression, the second part begins with a small letter. “I wish,” she said, “that we went to the same school.” GRAMMAR

Reread the stories of the boys on page 79. Write the main points of what happened to each boy. We are about half way through the novel. Ishmael has experienced several things throughout his journey thus far. On a piece of butcher paper, draw an outline of a body. Following the directions on the hand-out, list emotions/stresses and/or physical traits. Note how is the human spirit connected to the physical body? How is his culture influencing his identity? Present your findings to the class. CHAPTERS 1- 10
