Escape Pythagoreans Dungeon! Alex Marling Geometry Middle school Time to Escape!
Learning objectives The ghost of Pythagoras has you trapped in his dungeon! The only way that you can get out is by learning his theorem and then solve one of his questions If you can solve the question, he might just let you go! Here comes Pythagoras!
It’s your lucky day! I’ll let you out only if you can solve a question using my wonderful theorem! Hope you know Geometry! My theorem involves special types of triangles that have a right angle in them. That is, they have an angle that has a measure of 90 degrees! Make sure you pay attention! Click here!Click here
So the triangle will look something like this. A right triangle has two legs and a Hypotenuse. Now the hypotenuse, side C, is the longer side that is on the opposite side of the right angle. The two legs, sides A and B, are the sides adjacent to the right angle. Keep listening
Content slide 3 So how would you be able to find a length of one of the sides? Well thanks to me you can do that! All you have to do is take sides A and B and square them and then add them together. That answer should be equal to side C squared. So the formula looks like this So do you think you’re ready to answer my question? Let’s find out! Show Pythagoras what’s up
If side a = 4 and side b = 3, what is the length of side c? c = 5 c = 2 c = 6 c = 1
Given side a = 8 and side c = 10 what is the length of side b? b = 4b = 9 b = 2b = 6
Bring it on! Ok you got lucky. Answer one more then you’re free.
Try Again! Nope! = 36? I don’t think so.
Try Again! Uh check that again = 4? That can’t be right.
Try Again! Hang on… = 1…..you’re kidding right?
Try Again! Wait a minute! If side b = 2 then that means 64+4=100….that doesn’t seem quite right.
Play again Leave! That’s right! = 100. I guess you are free to go!
Try again! Hang on a second! If side b = 4 then that would mean = 100……If I’m not mistaken that isn’t right.
Try again! Not so fast! If side b = 9 then that would mean = 100……I think that may be wrong…just maybe
