St. Joseph’s Building Project

Introduction This power point will let you know what is happening with the building project. It goes from the beginning to near the end. It started in February 2012 and will finish in May 2012.

Preparing Before they could start the builders had to get three containers for the toilets and site office/storage. They had to do some electrical work to give electricity to the containers. They also had to fit a temporary heating system to keep us warm. It some times gets quite cold in school. containers

Getting started It started when the builders knocked down the store cupboard and toilet. They also dismantled the sheds and started to build the foundations.

The foundations Then the builders got some gravel delivered and spread the gravel around on the floor to make it stronger.

The cement mixer The cement mixer came one week to do the floor. They had a big pipe that led to the building which cement came out of. The builders spread it out with spades and rakes. They had to wear waders and wellies. This made the base for the building. Cement mixer

The crane and steel work A crane came and tried to put up the steel work, but its arm couldn’t reach over the school. So the builders had to get a bigger one. Then we went outside to look at it because it was so big. It could reach right over the school.

The brick work The builders started to build with breeze blocks on the out side. Eventually they will cover the breeze blocks with white render. They have started on the inside and put in the windows and door frames.

Putting the roof on During the Easter holidays, the builders put the roof on. We can’t really see the roof but it’s been made of wood and is water proof. the roof/ceiling

What we are hoping for We are hoping for a new infants classroom, toilets, a new cloakroom and a new office. We also want the old infant classroom to be removed. We don’t have enough money to take down the old infant classroom so we are going to try and raise some more money. On the inside of the school we got part of it plastered up because the builders couldn’t build on to glass windows. the plastered up bit of window

Summary We can’t wait until it’s finished. It’s very exciting. The infants will soon have an excellent classroom to work in.
