 At GBHS, we know that we couldn’t succeed in making a difference without the hard work of over 150 active volunteers!  We want you to get involved, and to become a part of the GBHS family. No matter your skillset or interest, there’s a way for your talents to impact the lives of people and pets in our community.  Each of our volunteers contributes in a variety of ways, from animal care to clinic help to program assistance and administrative help – we have a place for you! VOLUNTEERS: WHAT DO THEY DO?

Our volunteer department is comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds and interests, united by one shared goal: to help the people and pets of our city. GBHS makes a very serious commitment to our volunteers, and to the health and safety of our pets. In turn, we ask for the same from all of our volunteers. Before applying to join our volunteer department, please make sure that you have carefully reviewed ALL of the requirements on the next slide. All volunteers that are accepted into the program will be required to go through an orientation and training processes before beginning their service commitment. VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

 Be at least 16 years of age.  Able to commit to serving at least 6 hours every month, for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteers who can not commit to a schedule of that duration should not apply to our general program, but should us for other opportunities.  Able to set and maintain a weekly or bi-monthly schedule, set with the volunteer department.  Understand and accept GBHS philosophies regarding open admissions and humane euthanasia.  Communicate professionally, as human interaction is a requirement of all volunteer roles.  Understand and fulfill all responsibilities of their role independently.  Read and comprehend detailed policy and protocol information as well as being able to remember and follow shelter rules.  Be able to physically fulfill the duties of their volunteer role. Most volunteer roles require volunteers to: be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.; be able to reach and lift; possess vision abilities including close vision, distance vision and depth perception; be able to talk to customers, employees and other volunteers; be able to handle leashed animals of varying sizes.  GBHS volunteers are required to pay $20 joining dues to cover the cost of training and supplies, as well as to pay for their volunteer T-shirt. Scholarships are available to volunteers needing assistance.  With a positive attitude, emotionally manage a workplace that can be stressful VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

 How old do you have to be to volunteer at GBHS?  For safety reasons, we require that all of our volunteers who are interacting with the public or our pets be 16 or older.  I’m under 16. What can I do to help out?  We have several opportunities for youth that are under 16, but who still want to volunteer. Our Humane Teen Club offers year olds the chance to learn from professionals in the animal care field, or you can become a Paper Pal by helping us to lay out newspapers for our kittens and puppies either at home or in the center. If at any time during your six-month commitment you will be unavailable, simply let us know and you can put your commitment on hold.  I want to help, but can’t make a 6-month commitment or 6 hours a month commitment. What can I do?  For community members who want to help, but who can’t make the time commitment required to become a GBHS volunteer, the Socialization track may be right for you! To find out more, visit  After I apply, how long will it take before I can come in and get started?  We love enthusiasm, and can’t wait for you to get started either! However, we want to make sure that you have an unbeatable experience, and that you really become part of the GBHS family. All volunteers will have to wait for the application to be reviewed, attend an orientation, and undergo a training process – in total, it may be 2-4 weeks before you’re on the floor with your fellow volunteers.  Step Four: Eligible applicants will be contacted by a GBHS Volunteer Department representative to determine where they will best fit within the organization.  Step Five: Accepted volunteers will be required to attend a scheduled orientation class, held twice a month at GBHS.  Step Six: After orientation, volunteers will go through training to fully prepare them for their new role at GBHS.
