What is Child Abuse? It can be defined as causing or permitting (passive abuse) any harmful or offensive contact to a person under the age of 18's body; and/or Any communication or transaction which humiliates, shames, or frightens the person.

Facts about Child Abuse NY State DURING 2006 About 76,000 children were abused or neglected (approximately 16.9 of every 1,000 children). 62 Children are known to have died as a result of child abuse and neglect. 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18

Physical Abuse Definition Signs or Behavioral indicators The infliction of physical injury upon a child Signs or Behavioral indicators Unexplained bruises (in various stages of healing) Unexplained burns Swollen areas Self destructive behavior Bizarre explanation of injuries Inappropriate clothing for the season

Sexual Abuse Definition Signs or Behavioral indicators The inappropriate sexual behavior with a child – this may include non-touching; obscene language and exposure to pornography. Touching, fondling, molesting and oral sex. Signs or Behavioral indicators Difficulty walking or sitting Excessive weight change Suicide Attempts Threatened by physical contact

Emotional Abuse Definition Signs and Behavioral indicators Includes acts or the failure to act by parents or caretakers that have caused or could cause, serious behavioral emotional or mental disorders. Definition Signs and Behavioral indicators Speech disorders Delayed physical development Habit disorder (sucking thumb, rocking or biting) Passive or Aggressive behavior to the extreme Substance abuse

Neglect Definition Signs or Behavioral Indicators The failure to provide for the child’s basic needs – both physical and emotional. Signs or Behavioral Indicators Dirty Hungry Overly sensitive Self destructive

Who are abusers? In 80% of the cases of physical abuse, emotional abuse or neglect, the abusers are the birth parents In 90% of cases of sexual abuse, the child is familiar with the abuser (a family member or even a friend of the family)

How do you respond to someone disclosing abuse to you? Listen Do not interrupt Pause Do not ask to many questions at first Reassure Do not act shocked Believe I believe you Be honest Tell the person that you can not keep a secret Seek help If you do not know who may help – get help

How do we prevent the “cycle effect”? Educate every person who deals with children to what child abuse is Educate children what child abuse is Offer support to adults who are abusers Report child abuse
