Presentation transcript:

Use of Bad and Disrespectful Language by children December 8, 2014 Ms. Susan Counselling Department

Common Used Bad Words

Why do children use bad language? They are trying to fit in or act cool They are struggling with anger issues Sometimes children use offensive language to upset you and get attention and power Out of curiosity For younger children the word may seem funny

Why do children use bad language? Use of word by accident They may be imitating friends or family members They may use bad talk to get attention or a reaction They may use disrespectful language when upset

Prevention… Proactively teach children how to express their feelings. Even anger can be explained in words Sensitize children to understanding the meanings of the words they use. What does it mean? How does it reflect on them or the family? How does it make the people they love feel ? How does it make people who love them feel?

Prevention… If disrespectful language begins, both parents should use the same consequences immediately. -You can’t control the language outside your home when your children are with friends, but at least you can maintain a reasonably wholesome atmosphere within. Correct your children’s friends if they use inappropriate language when visiting.

Prevention… Help children to understand that violent language will be taken seriously and has consequences at home and school. Monitor the adult language used around children. -Children repeat or exceed your worst language in their efforts to seem grown up. Always remember children learn from parents-what you say or do. Parents should always lead by example Teach children to STOP & THINK before they SPEAK or ACT

Prevention… Make sure children have plenty of positive ways to get attention and power. Always try to get to know where the language is coming from and not to over react or act surprised.

Prevention…

Conclusion When a child says bad words it does not mean that he/she is a bad child. Thank You!
