Gramática 9.1 Pensar and pensar que with infinitives El 14/15 de mayo

Notes You will copy the following notes on page 178 of your INB. The title for this section is: Pensar and pensar que If you run out of room, get a loose leaf-paper and continue your notes there.

Pensar and pensar que The e→ie stem-changing verb pensar means to think. When it’s followed by que, it means to think that…. I think that the guests are going to… Pienso que los invitados van a hablar y bailar toda la noche. Va a ser una fiesta muy divertida. Pensar (to think) pienso pensamos piensas pensáis piensa piensan

Pensar and pensar que with Infinitives Pensar can also be followed by an infinitive to say what someone wants to do or intends to do.   What do you plan to do to celebrate New Year’s Eve? ¿Qué piensan hacer para celebrar el Año Nuevo? We plan to go skiing. Pensamos ir a esquiar.

Gramática 9.2 Conocer and personal a Present progressive El 14/15 de mayo

Notes You will copy the following notes on page 178 of your INB. The title for this section is: Conocer and personal a If you run out of room, get a loose leaf-paper and continue your notes there.

conocer (to know (a person or place)) The verb conocer is used to say you know or meet people, or that you are familiar with a place or thing. It is irregular in the yo form.   Aquí viene mi prima Claudia. ¿Quieres conocerla? Ya la conozco. ¿Conocen las obras de Calderón de la Barca? No, no las conocemos. conocer (to know (a person or place)) conozco conocemos conoces conocéis conoce conocen

Conocer a When a name or noun referring to a person is the direct object of conocer or other verbs, the word a comes before it. This a has no translation. ¿Conoces a mi hermano? Sí, conozco a toda tu familia. The preposition a combines with the definite article el to form the contraction al.

Notes You will copy the following notes on page 179 of your INB. The title for this section is: Present Progressive If you run out of room, get a loose leaf-paper and continue your notes there.

Present progressive To say what is happening right now, use the present progressive, combine a present tense form of estar with the present participle. Form the present participle by replacing -ar with -ando and -er/-ir with -iendo. Cantar → cantando Rosa está cantando. Rosa is singing. Comer → comiendo Estamos comiendo. We are eating.

Vowel Stems When the stem of an -er/-ir verb ends in a vowel, form the present participle by changing the i of -iendo to -y (-yendo). Leer → leyendo ¿Estás leyendo? Are you reading?

Stem-changing -IR Verbs The participle of stem-changing -ir verbs like pedir, dormir, and servir change o→u and e→i. There are no stem changes for -ar and -er verbs.   Dormir → durmiendo Servir → sirviendo

Ir and Venir The verbs ir and venir are not usually used in the present progressive. Use the simple present tense instead. Are you coming to the party? ¿Vienes a la fiesta? No, I’m going to the library. No, voy a la biblioteca.

Direct Object and Reflexive Pronouns with the Present Progressive Direct Object and reflexive pronouns can go before the conjugated forms of estar or can be attached to the end of a present participle. When you attach the direct object or reflexive pronoun to the end of the present participle, place an accent mark on the stressed vowel.   ¿La tarea? La estoy haciendo. (Estoy haciéndola.) ¿Mis hijos? Se están bañando. (Están bañándose.)
