El Preterito So far, you have worked with the present tenses in Spanish. There are 2 past tenses in Spanish. We are going to learn the preterite tense.
The Preterite Tense The preterite is used for talking about actions completed in the past.
Preterite of regular - AR verbs To form the preterite of a regular –AR verb, you drop the -AR, then add the correct ending to the stem. When you drop the –AR of the verb, you are left with the stem. Hablar -> Habl Comprar -> Compr
Preterite of regular –AR verbs -é-amos -astex -ó-aron Yo hablé I talked, I did talk, I was talking Nosotros hablamos We talked, we did talk, we were talking Tú hablaste You talked, you did talk, you are talking x Él habló He talked, he did talk, he was talking Ellos hablaron They talked, they did talk, they were talking
Aguas (careful!) This tense can be tricky because the accents are so important and really change the meaning = Hablo = I talk. Hablo = I talk. Habló = He/she talked. Habló = He/she talked.
Bailar- to dance Yo bailé I cleaned, I did clean, I was cleaning Nosotros bailamos Tú bailastex Él bailóEllos bailaron
Estudiar = to study Yo estudié Nosotros estudiamos Tú estudiaste x Él estudió Ellos estudiaron
