6th European University-Business Forum PARTNERSHIPS FOR JOBS AND GROWTH Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship Ellen Shipley, Partnership & Support Manager UnLtd SEE Change Programme March 2015 Good Morning and Welcome to Birmingham. I’m Shahed Molvi ,Programme Performance and Design Lead at UnLtd – The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. I am really please to launch our 3rd programme in partnership with HEFCE – our newly rebranded programme - SEE Change. We put the name out to a democratic vote amongst our HEI partners and this one came back with the most votes! Also internally at UnLtd we liked SEE Social Entrepreneurship in Education as it allows us to house all our education focused programmes under a single campaign name – so Schools, Colleges and Universities , but gives us the flexibility to tailor the messages to particular sectors.

UnLtd: Our Vision A world where people act to make it better UnLtd is the foundation for social entrepreneurs in the UK and we reach out and unleash the energies of people who can transform the world in which they live. We call these people social entrepreneurs. UnLtd is a charitable company, and is also the trustee of the Millennium Awards Trust, endowed with £100,000,000 in funds from the UK National Lottery, and overseen by a Protector of the Trust.

OUR WORK Backing social entrepreneurs We back around 1000 people each year to start their own ventures for social or environmental benefit, with a mix of cash, development support and networking. We then support around 50 per year to get to scale, with more intensive support. We support other agencies in the UK and internationally to develop their own start up social entrepreneur support programmes, creating a learning network.

WHO ARE... 238,000 1.7m Social entrepreneurs? People with: Potential to make positive change Passion to solve a social problem Who have: An idea for a solution Entrepreneurial qualities Who are: Resilient and resourceful Determined to make their idea a reality 238,000 People in UK trying to start a social venture (0.4% of population) 1.7m Leading one now (2.8% of population)

Our Awards HEIs are adopting and adapting Try it Do it Build it Up to £500 To test an idea To develop confidence and entrepreneurial skills Do it Up to £5,000 For exceptional people to start their journeys, building entrepreneurial skill and capacity Build it Up to £15,000 For existing ventures ambitious to grow, but not necessarily to national scale Fast growth Up to £20,000 Can be given to ventures at any stage of development For people ambitious to scale rapidly One University has developed a taste it awards £50 to create social impact and income over a weekend We have also seen £20 ‘coaster’ challenges

Some tangible outcomes... £45 million Wage value of jobs created each year 95% of social entrepreneurs supported create social capital and promote trust in communities 76% of social entrepreneurs we support are still running their venture 3 years after getting an Award from us 97% of social entrepreneurs supported said that their UnLtd funding was important to get their venture to its current position 1.2m Total number of beneficiaries reached by survey respondents in a year 69% of social entrepreneurs supported train people

Social Entrepreneurship in Education So , the story so far Started back in 2009 when only a handful of you were in the social enterprise space, and we need to build a mass movement and support for this work. We worked in 70 institutions and supported 200 university based SE. Phase 2 which just ended in August – was where you stepped up to the plate , some for the very first time, to find, fund and support SE yourselves. And boy did you guys kill it! 750 awards and counting and 1.4m invested directly in SE. What can I say , except thanks for making us look good! That’s a staggering achievement. I can’t wait to see what you do in the next programme ! Phase 3 will be a very different type of programme, Lauren will give you an overview later, but very much the emphasis will be on partnerships, collaboration and networks. And really embedding this work in the sector, so that this way of working becomes a mainstay of the enterprise support offer in as many HEIs as possible.

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR adopt, adapt, embed, amplify PHASE 1 Dare To Be Different 2009 – 2011 Awareness: UnLtd deliver in 70 HEIs Outcomes and impact 200 new social ventures created by staff and students After 12 months: each social venture achieved on average 540 beneficiaries, average of 2 jobs,12 volunteers, and £5,800 in additional income. Evaluation revealed: enhanced teaching, research impact, knowledge exchange, staff development Evidence of social entrepreneurship as ‘learning by doing’ approach. PHASE 2 HE Support 2012 – 2013 UnLtd work with 56 HEIs to deliver support Effective eco-system of support for staff, student and graduate social entrepreneurs – embedding in HEI structures Funding up to £25,000, matched by cash, staff time and facilities National and regional training events: developing resources and sharing effective practice Build capacity of HEIs to establish systems, tools, methods and processes. PHASE 3 SEE Change Partners 2013 - 2015 HE sector will lead on knowledge exchange, skills transfer and mainstreaming support for Social Entrepreneurs £2m pilot investment in HE 59 Awards Programme HEI Partners – ‘finding, funding and supporting’ student, staff and graduate social entrepreneurs across each and every institution 8 funded Regional and Thematic Clusters of universities and other partners creating local impact and ecosystems of support for social entrepreneurs 11 funded ‘Scale and Growth’ partners, all at different stages of developing funding, support and infrastructure for high potential SEs and all demonstrating existing pipeline 5 funded Innovation Partnerships bringing in external innovation outside of the HE Sector

Why Should Universities Support Social Entrepreneurs? Universities have had to become more responsive to students‘ needs: Enhancing the student experience Increases student employability – ‘Learning by Doing’ Contributes to the wider society by supporting social ventures

The wider community is positively impacted Ventures address a wide range of social needs, below we can see the needs that were directly met by the supported social ventures.

What next?... Towards a possible ‘Phase 4’… HEFCE as the cornerstone, but no longer a sole funder A focus on international work Ecosystem-building A focus on embedding this work Mechanisms for developing and building on culture change Social Innovation as a key agenda

We are therefore supporting agencies in several sectors, from higher education to community organisations, to develop their own social entrepreneur support functions for their constituencies.
