Recently torrential rains and flooding ravaged large areas of Mahabubnagar Over dozens of people missing and 2 lakh people have been evacuated. Rains washed away homes, roads and villages, leaving thousands of people to homeless. Rains damaged public property and private crops and ripped open few hundreds of irrigation tanks. In Andhra Pradesh state, meteorologists recorded 26 to 36 inches of rain – the highest amount in a century. Floods in the district affected 16 mandals (revenue blocks each consisting of villages) and 131 villages. The affected population is 601,363 with more than 19,000 houses fully damaged and the standing crops in 5,584 ha are affected. The government report mentions that 28,424 families and 138,172 persons have been evacuated by the government due to floods.

Eye camps were conducted in more than 110 remote villages and some backward areas of urban towns with help of local Lions Clubs. Over 13,103 people were screened and more than 1289 eye surgeries performed. 4,813 people were given free glasses and 1,350 were given free medicines. Undertook Sponsor a Child for education program with $10,000 USD over the span of 2 years, in collaboration with local organization. Under this program 30 kids sponsored for 2 years. Under Education Fund program sponsored many students for Engineering and Medical Schools. Established Abroad Study center in Mahabubnagar town with cost of Rs.5 lakhs.

Most schools in affected areas are being used as temporary shelters. There are reports of school books, writing and reading materials being washed away. In some places, school buildings are damaged (15 school buildings; mainly kutcha). Local teachers say that schools would resume only after restoration of infrastructure and cleaning of mud which is almost 5 to 10ft in height. Recommendations By Experts Committee A proper assessment of schools and children IDPs to be carried out and identify class-wise school going children staying in relief camps and temporary sites. School buildings should be assessed for the damage to the structures. Restore education through supply of text books, note books, study materials (e.g. slates, pens, pencils etc.) to school going children. Continuity of schools in camps and temporary sites needs to be ensured by involving NGOs and other volunteers. Alternately, the District Administration can depute teacher-trainees to these centers to revive schooling.  Promotion of hygiene-education and play-way learning can be initiated in these camp-based schools.  Once the temporary camps are closed, cleaning of surroundings and sanitization to be carried out.  Renovate the damaged school buildings before reusing them.

Palamoor NRI Forum formed by people from Mahabubanagar and who understands dist well. PNRIF Implemented many projects in district and understands NRIs perspective how to spend your dollars. We have good relations with district administration. Importantly we let you know where your dollar spent and who benefitted. Not like your donation is a drop in a bucket. Strengths
