What is Distracted Driving? Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving and increase the risk of an accident. There are three main types of distraction: Visual — taking your eyes off the road Manual — taking your hands off the wheel Cognitive — taking your mind off what you’re doing Distracted driving is what is means, but are you aware of the types of distracted driving? While all distractions can endanger drivers’ safety, texting is the most alarming because it involves all three types of distraction. Copyright Retail Association Services, Inc.

Distracting Activities Eating and drinking Talking to passengers Putting on makeup Using a cell phone Reading, including a navigation system Watching a video Changing the radio station, CD, or Mp3 player. Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. (Source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Accidents from this type of driving cause time loss of employees, increased insurance rates, as well as a vehicle being out of commission for a while. Washington State law on cell phone use while driving The Washington State Patrol announced that hand held cell phone use while driving and failure to use a hands-free device became a primary traffic offense on July 1, 2008. The fine for the violation is $124. RCW 46.61.667 Is it legal to use a navigation program on an cell phone? A: It is as long as it's permanently affixed to their vehicle. If the phone is in a driver's hand while the GPS is being used – the likely scenario for most people – it's against the law, troopers say. People will likely argue what "permanently affixed" means. Bottom line, troopers don't want drivers to be looking at GPS devices in their hand while driving. So a Smart Phone with all the distractions: texting, calling, gps, internet access Our company policy for driving and using a cell phone while performing company business is in line with the state rule that was enacted in 2008, which is no handheld use of a cell phone while driving. Washington State law on texting while driving The Washington State Patrol announced that texting while driving and failure to use a hands-free device became a primary traffic offense on June 10, 2010. The fine for the violation is $124. RCW 46.61.668 Does using a GPS device violate the texting while driving law? A: RCW 46.61.668 states drivers can use a GPS or navigation device if it's "permanently affixed to the vehicle.“ That means if the GPS device is not affixed to the vehicle, driver's can get a $124 ticket. Our company policy for driving while using a cell phone while performing company business is in line with the state rule that was enacted in 2008, which is no handheld use of a cell phone while driving. Cell Phones - Alternatives and Exceptions Hands Free Alternatives Bluetooth Voice-activated and speed dialing Push-to-Talk devices (radio) Voice mail and Caller ID answer caller until getting to safe destination Exceptions: Emergencies – calling law enforcement for assistance Reporting road hazards to the authorities Notifying the authorities of erratic driver - 911 Before using for emergency, determine if the call can be made safely. Hands free alternatives are better than texting, but are still distracting. Some newer vehicles have built in hands free via ‘bluetooth’. Be careful even when using those features. For this reason, hand held cell phone use or texting while driving must be avoided and is illegal in the State of Washington. It is important that you not take that text or call until you can do it safely and save it for the next exit, rest stop, parking lot. Copyright Retail Association Services, Inc.
