Celebrate World Peace Day Make a Pinwheel on September 21st

Join the “whirled” peace movement! Pinwheels for Peace* Is an INSTALLATION ART PROJECT for ALL ages The idea was started in 2005 by Ann Ayers & Ellen McMillan, two Art teachers from Coconut Creek, Florida as a way for children to express feelings about world events and their lives. Millions of Pinwheels for Peace have been displayed worldwide Join the “whirled” peace movement!

What is a Pinwheel? A Kinetic Sculpture that moves in the breeze to provide entertainment for all!

How to make a “Pin-less” Pinwheel These are safe alternative directions that do not require the use of a pin or nail. Easily created by young children Uses readily found materials

Materials Download the template on www.pinwheelsforpeace.com or, an 8 inch square piece of paper A stick, pencil, chopstick or straw A chenille stem or wire 3 “Pony” beads Scissors Ruler Pencil Crayons, Markers, or other coloring tools

Steps Step 1- Gather all your materials Step 2- Cut the square from the template. If you are making your own pinwheel, without a template, you need to make an X on the square paper corner to corner. Place your ruler on the opposite corners, with a pencil draw a diagonal line. Repeat the step on the other side.

Steps Continued: Step 3- Decorate your Pinwheel – Include one or more “Elements of Design” or, write messages of Peace.

Putting the pinwheel together Step 4 –Use a whole punch to punch a hole in every other corner and the center. bend paper in center to do this. Step 5 - Cut the X – Leaving one inch from the center on each side

Preparing the stick Step 6 – At the top of your stick, wind chenille stem or wire around and twist three times. Step 7 – place 2 pony beads on the chenille stem

Steps – Assembling the Pinwheel Step 8 – Place the middle of the pinwheel on the chenille stem, then place the corners you punched on the chenille stem. Step 9 – Add the last pony bead Step 10- open both ends of the chenille stem, like wings. Trim if needed
