Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Waste Analysis

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Opinion Survey November 2008 Questionnaires personally dispensed and – after a while recollected - by Waste Consultants or Students of Commercial Colleges, filled in self-dependently Return Rate: 42% 387 Questionnaires out of 928 Apartments, 383 analysable representative for Niederösterreich

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Opinion Survey Current State of: Approach Knowledge Self-Description Reasons Valuation of Measures

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge „If I must throw away food…“ I don't think about it I don't care I am sorry, but it happens It disturbs me a lot n/a

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge „Do you agree?“ I do not agreeI do not agree fullyI rather agree I agree fully One hears a lot about food in the waste This problem is exaggerated To throw away food costs money To throw less food prevents waste

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge „How much food do you throw away – compared to others?“ much less little less same little more much more

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Applicable to your Household? I am using rests to cook I go for shopping with shopping list I often buy more than is written on the shopping list Food is inedible before the expiring date I often cook more than we eat We like to try new recipes noRather noRather yes yesmissing

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Valuation of Measures Very effective: Information about good food storage; Information how to identify the edibility; Smaller packages; Shopping list Effective: Tips how to use rests of food; Tips how to conserve food; Information about warming of food Not really effective: Personal consultation; Data base for recipes on the Internet

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Kick Off with Press Conference

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Steps of the Project –Measures of Public Relations: Trailer ORF NÖ und Recipes in Radio NÖ, Tips for Shopping, Tips for Prevention of Food Waste, Articles in Different Papers, Give away, Posters for the Bin Sites, Data Base for Recipes, … –Compendium of the Relevant Measures –Implementation in the whole of NÖ.

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Waste Analysis 2009 Residual Waste: - 21 % Preventable Food Biowaste: + 13 % Preventable Food All in all: - 11 % Preventable Food

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Results of the Opinion Survey 1 Respondents felt more responsible for throwing away food instead of accusing the industry and the commerce. Respondents said that they throw away less food than before the start of the project. Almost 1/3 said that their way of handling food had changed compared to the previous year. About half of them – thats 1/6 of all respondents - trace this back to the project.

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Results of the Opinion Survey 2 Noted Best: Stickers on the Bins of Residual Waste Articles in local Newspapers Clipboard with Writing Pad for Shopping Lists Rated Best: Clipboard with Writing Pad for Shopping Lists Stickers on the Bins of Residual Waste Placard about the Mixture of the Residual Waste of the specific Appartment Complex

Amt der NÖ Landesregierung, DI Christiane Hannauer FOCUS Environmental Education, Food in Waste Materials The big Challenge Facts Filling in the opinion survey was a measure itself. „Noted Best“ and „Rated Best“ does not always mean „Takes the Best Effect“. Preventing foodwaste means: Change of lifestyles – therefore needs long-term measures. Still the Pilot Project shows: Basics for modifications of awareness and behaviour can be layed in a 1 years project.
