Transition Year in Ramsgrange CS By: Ms Louise Walsh

 Transition Year is a one-year programme after Junior cycle and before Senior cycle.  It is an extra year optional programme in RCS (it is compulsory in some schools)  Students who do TY can opt to do LCA or traditional Leaving Certificate after the year. What is Transition Year?

 To experience a Broad Curriculum of subjects  To develop New Skills – practical and life skills  To avail of New Opportunities – trips, visitors, modules (first aid, GAA, music, drama, photography)  To experience the World of Work – 1 day a week  To improve on areas of Academic Weakness  To experience the World Abroad  To give time to Mature – year older doing LC  To give time to think about the Future and potential Career Options Aims of Transition Year

Transition Year Curriculum Varies to suit the group –students have lessons in the following as part of their standard weekly timetable:  Maths  English  Irish/Gaelic Studies  Environmental Social Studies = History/Geography  Business/Enterprise  European Studies/Euth Project  Languages: French  Religion  PE  Guidance/SPHE/Work Prep  Practical Subjects  Art  Woodwork /Engineering  Home Economics  IT /ECDL  Science  Work Experience – 1 day a week  Modular Work over the course of the Year such as: - GAA coaching - horticulture - Drama/Music - Robotics/Programming - First Aid - Photography

 Someone who is positive and interested and who wants to gain additional skills  Someone who wants a chance to build up their CV  Someone who wants to become more confident, mature and independent  Someone who is willing to get involved in group activities and project work Who should do Transition Year?

 Someone who is young and could afford to spend an extra year in school  Someone who missed out academically in Junior Cycle  Someone who is still unsure of what they want to do in the future and wants time to decide  Students Interested will be given an Application Form in the coming weeks and all students who apply will be Interviewed (hands up who is interested today?) Who should do Transition Year?

 Time to make a decision for yourself not based on what your friends are/are not doing!!  Not a “doss year”  Get out of it what you put into it  You have to be willing to get involved in all aspects of TY  Cost – 2015/2016 €270 but students will have to pay for buses also and some trips abroad  Note: Many opportunities to reduce costs  Bag Pack (€1000 with some for charity) & other Mini Enterprises by TY Group or Build a Bank  Part time job Other Considerations
