How are you GROWING? Learning What big things you’ve learned this year? How are you smarter? How have your grown your knowledge and the use of it? Leadership What have you led this year? an effort, development, research, etc. What have you “owned”? What did you pioneer? We have lift off with Innovation Engineering! As a participant said to his boss when returning from Innovation College last week “I explained that in my opinion, IE had hit a point of critical mass - in terms of corporate/academic acceptance and overall program conception - and that new success of the program would likely be fast and enormous. “ All innovations hit a “saddle” when they move from early adopters to the early majority who are more demanding of simplicity and offering maturity. This was the case with the Ipod. Early adopters had no problem ripping and loading in their own MP3’s. However for iPod to take off it took the introduction of ITunes that made it a complete and easy system. BLUE was the key for Innovation Engineering. BLUE Cards linked strategy to tactics. Invention BLUE Prints made it easy to do tech mining in a way that was fast, fun and easy. Reorganized for Constancy of Purpose & Long Term Sustainability: As it became clear that we were at lift off - I spent way more hours than I would have liked with lawyers and accountants and our board advisors reworking our corporate structure, creating joint ventures as well as discontinuing agreements where appropriate and spinning off areas that are best done by others. For me this was like a “root canal.” However I believe it will pay dividends for the movement for years to come. Making the CEO Coaching Flip: This year - out of necessity as the movement grew - I moved from 100% hands on CEO to a 50/50 blend with 50% being hands on (that I love) and 50% being coaching others. I’m doing a better job of working with the team on where I can most help them and add value. Continued development of this will be critical for long term growth. I must not become the barrier to growth of people, processes or the movement in general Year in Review - Doug Hall Moving into Continue What things are right on track and you should keep doing, just as you are? Start What things should you start doing that you aren’t doing today? Stop What things that you’re doing today should you stop doing? Number 1: I need to continue to make the CEO Coaching Flip. It takes longer the first time this way - but the long term effect is exponential. Number 2: I need to continue to take responsibility for our structures and Joint Ventures - current and future. This means the contract details (ugh) - the terns, the relationships between groups. I need to do this today because I have the longest history and broadest view of the movement. In time, as the systems come under more control I will need to teach others how to do it. Number 3: I need to continue to set the long term vision. While others get caught in the day to day - I need to get the experiences inside and outside the movement to inspire new opportunities to address our two Blue Cards. IE BOOK: I need to find time to finish the Innovation Engineering Leadership Book. I’ve started it and stopped it. It’s time to drive it to completion. A great starting point is the paper I’ve been asked to present at the Deming Institute Research Conference in NYC in March. HEALTH: The stress of being a new start up - new business models - new JV’s - new offerings has hurt my health. To last like Deming - I need to improve my health. Over Supporting We have JV’s and Corporate and Commercial Licensees. I need to trust the system and allow more failures. When people are struggling I “jump in” too quick and try to fix things. Remember to Educate: I need to learn the virtue of “patience” as a wise friend said. I must remember Deming - when I’m frustrated with those that don’t get it… How could they know? How could they? How could they?. :)
