What is the University/Cultural (U/C) Fund? ▪ The U/C Fund provides student organizations with financial resources to develop programs that promote the arts, co-curricular education, health and safety, multiculturalism and diversity, university/community service, and/or cross-cultural collaboration.

▪ The University Fund was created for all student organizations registered with Duke Student Government. Source: Philip Morris & Ford Foundation grants. ▪ The Office of the President (Nan Keohane) created the Cultural Fund at the bequest of cultural student organizations to support their annual signature programs. U/C Fund ▪ The funds allocates $116,000 each semester, for a total of $232,000 a year. ▪ Offices supporting the University/Cultural Fund: Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs. Students are discouraged from seeking additional funding from these offices.

Who Can Apply? Any student organization that meets the following qualifications: (1)Is formally recognized or chartered by Duke University (2)Has an assigned fund code or account issued by the University Center for Activities and Events (UCAE) (3) Primarily benefits undergraduate students

What Do We Fund Programs that promote and/or involve performance, visual, or other artistic forms. Arts Programs that are academically-based such as lectures, symposiums, workshops, and seminars. Co-curricular Education Programs that promote wellness and/or safe behaviors and lifestyles. Health and Safety

What Do We Fund Programs that engage students in the sharing of cultures via cultural and/or intercultural activities and dialogues. Multiculturalism and Diversity Programs that promote civic engagement and/or provide a needed service to the Duke or Durham community. University/Community Service Programs that involve the collaboration of at least two student organizations, that usually do not work together, to develop, implement, and evaluate such programs, particularly between domestic and international student groups. What We Don’t Fund Alcohol or illegal items Exclusive events such as retreats, general body meetings, programs consistently held off campus Support of political candidates Items for personal use (i.e. chess games) Events that will take place on University Holidays Fundraising benefitting the student organization Scholarships or Staff/Faculty/Student Salaries Transportation to events or performance arts tickets Costumes/ props for performances T-shirts, gifts, or giveaways

General Tips for Your Application Proposal Tips 1)Indicate if a program involves collaboration with another student organization (do not just list other student organizations without having already mutually discussed the collaboration). 2)Describe the frequency of your program (i.e., weekly, monthly, annually, etc). 3)Share past experiences regarding your program if it is a traditional program (i.e., what worked well, what you would change, etc). 4)The larger the amount of funds requested, the more detailed information should be made available. For example, please demonstrate how you arrive at food costs - the cost per person for food costs. 5)Details are needed. Ask yourself if someone submitted your proposal to you, would you have enough information to make a sound decision?

General Guidance for Your Application Budget Tips 1)Invest the time to research the estimated expenses you provide. Obtain quotes for speakers, entertainment, catering, audio/video, airfare, hotels, etc. 2)Save on traveling and lodging expenses by searching locally (i.e., Duke and/or Triangle area for speakers, entertainment, etc.) 3)List the technical equipment as well as technical staff hours needed for your program.
