Briefing on Beijing+20 by Satu Lassila - UN Women

- Beijing+20 occurs at the conjunction of major historic processes: deadline of the MDGs, elaboration of the SDGs, Global Review of Resolution 1325 and 2015 UN Climate Change Conference or COP21. -In July 2013, ECOSOC tasked CSW to undertake a review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. In addition of the review, UN Women is carrying out a series of high-profile activities. CONTEXT

UN Women’s activities are aimed at: - Renewed political will and commitment by Member States - Enhanced social mobilization, awareness-raising and revitalized public debate - Strengthened evidence-base and knowledge - Enhanced resources OBJECTIVES

KEY ACTIVITIES - National, regional, global reviews and appraisal -Global thematic events and high-level events - Communication and social mobilization campaign

REVIEWS - Record achievement with 164 national reports submitted. 4 regional reviews already took place. The last one, for the MENA region, will take place in February. - The review process will culminate in CSW59 with the presentation of the r eport of Secretary-General which will provide a global assessment of progress made and challenges remaining for each of the 12 critical areas. - Member States will adopt an action-oriented political declaration during CSW59.

GLOBAL THEMATIC EVENTS -Events aimed at sharing cutting-edge experience and knowledge in each critical area and engaging with a variety of policy makers, political leaders, technical experts and gender advocates. -More than 50 global events took place around the world in to 20 more global events will take place in 2015.

- Commemorative Event during CSW on 10 March 2015 Purpose: Celebrate the global achievements and gains of women and girls have made since Beijing and launch ‘Call to action’ to end gender equality by Format: Combination of substantive messages and call for action with performances by international artists. - Global Leaders’ Meeting on 26 September 2015 Purpose: Opportunity for Member States to voice their commitment to achieve gender equality and to launch new initiatives. HIGH-LEVEL EVENTS

COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN - Year long campaign ‘ Empowering Women - Empowering Humanity: Picture It!’ with a website in 3 languages. - Information package released every month on a specific critical area of concern of the Platform for Action. - Final phase to be launched in March with a call to action to STEP IT UP! - concrete commitments from UN Member States to address existing gender equality gaps that have been identified in their national reports.
