Medieval Art Skills and Principles Day 1 Commonly Misspelled Word: Medieval The word is spelled medieval not midevil. Use of a Dash Dashes are used for two main functions: 1. To emphasize a point, to set off a comment or to provide additional information. 2. An appositive phrase that already uses commas. When a word or phrase interrupts a sentence, make sure that you place dashes on either side of the word or phrase. On a computer, dashes are created by hitting the hyphen key twice. When writing, write out two hyphens.

Double Negative: But as an Adjective When used as an adjective, the word but will create a negative; therefore, you should not use it with other negative words such as not. Replace but with the word only and delete the negative. There wasn't but one reason to run: the teacher had a knife. Incorrect There was only one reason to run: the teacher had a knife. Correct

Day 2 Capitalization of Religious Terms Religious terms such as the Lord, God, Bible and Savior are capitalized. Adverbs Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. They often end in –ly. Adjectives never describe other adjectives; they only describe nouns or pronouns. The Subordinating Conjunction Like versus As if Use the word like as a preposition and the words as if as a subordinating conjunction between complete clauses. The golem looked like it was going to attack my mother-in-law. Incorrect The golem looked as if it was going to attack my mother-in-law. Correct

Proper adjectives are adjectives created from proper nouns. As with proper nouns, proper adjectives need to be capitalized. Nationalities are proper adjectives. (Spanish, French, Hispanic) Day 3 Punctuation with Parentheses When parentheses are around a complete sentence, the period goes inside the parentheses. When they are around a word or phrase--not a complete sentence--the period goes outside the parentheses. Compound Adjective A compound adjective is an adjective composed of two words. Use hyphens in a compound adjective only when it comes before the word it modifies. However, some compound adjectives are always hyphenated, such as well-balanced. a well-liked author/an author who is well liked a world-renowned composer/a composer who is world renowned

should be an adjective, not an adverb. Predicate Adjectives Adjectives which appear after a linking verb are called predicate adjectives because they form part of the predicate. The words seems, looks etcetera are considered linking verbs and thus, the modifier following these words should be an adjective, not an adverb. That salad looks well to me. Incorrect That salad looks good to me. Correct Day 4 Coordinating Conjunctions A coordinating conjunction is a word which joins together two independent clauses (has both a subject and predicate) that are equally important. A comma comes before the conjunction. The most common coordinating conjunctions are the following: and--joins two similar ideas but--joins two contrasting ideas or--joins two alternative ideas so--shows that the second idea is the result of the firstnor nor--joins two negative alternatives for--meaning because yet--meaning but

Sequence of Verb Tenses In a sentence with two clauses, the verbs must show simultaneous occurance or sequence of occurance. If one verb is in the past and another verb occured before it, the verb that occured first needs to be in the pluperfect or past perfect tense (using the helping verbs had, has etcetera). Because she had murdered him, Myron did not come to Sally's party. NOT Because she murdered him, Myron did not come to Sally's party. Subject and Verb Agreement The verb of a sentence should argree in number with the subject. The dog eat out of that bowl so I wouldn't use it for cereal. Incorrect The dog eats out of that bowl so I wouldn't use it for cereal. Correct Do not let words that come between the subject and the verb influence the number of the verb. The dog, not the cats, eat my shoes. Incorrect The dog, not the cats, eats my shoes. Correct

Further versus farther Day 5 Faulty Subordination Subordinating an idea in a sentence means that the writer considers it less important than another idea. Make sure that the subordinate clause is really subordinate. For example, make sure the subordinate clause is really the cause of the event in the main clause. Because she did not understand Spanish, Mila disregarded the warning not to eat the pretty flower. NOT Because Mila disregarded the warning not to eat the flower, she did not understand Spanish. Further versus farther Further refers to a distance that cannot be measured and referred to as a number while farther refers to physical distance that can be measured and referred to as a number.

A participial phrase is a phrase made up from a participle plus Participles A participle is a word created from a verb that is used as an adjective. There are two types of participles--the present participle that ends in -ing and past participles that end in -ed, -en, -d, -t or -n. Present participle singing as in "the singing nun" walking as in "the walking dude" Past participle squandered as in "the squandered money" eaten as in "the eaten soup" Participial Phrase A participial phrase is a phrase made up from a participle plus modifier(s)/noun(s)/pronoun(s)/or noun phrase(s).

Non-restrictive Phrases and Clauses Non-restrictive means that the phrase or clause does not add important information to the sentence. The sentence would retain its meaning if the clause or phrase were removed. Non-restrictive phrases and clauses are set off from the rest of a sentence by commas.
