The outline of presentation: The conception of racism The main levels of racism Racism in Lithuania What You can do to stop racism References

You probably know what racism is! It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another- or the belief that another person is less than a human - because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person.

What do you call two blacks on one bike? Organized crime! Why do black people have white hands? Everyone has some good in them! I like black people..... I used to have some black friends 'till my dad sold them! Why did the Jews walk around the desert for 40 years? They heard that someone dropped a quarter!

Racism exists at three main levels: Individual racism Institutional racism Cultural racism

Experiences of Individual Racism: Verbal abuse Physical assault Stalking and intimidation Bullying of children Attitudes of service providers and others Discrimination in hiring Exploitation in work situations (under payment, denial of overtime)

Experiences of Institutional Racism: Lack of recourse for people suffering from racism Adoption of policies that result in people exclusion Bad treatment of service providers

Cultural racism Cultural racism involves the cultural values and standards that disadvantage people because of their race, color or ethnicity.

Racism in Lithuania According to the population census of the year 2001: citizens 115 different nations % Lithuanians 6.74 % Poles 6.31 % Russians

What does the law say about racism? Article 169 of the Lithuanian Penal Code provides the responsibility for racial, sex, origin, religion or other kind of discrimination. Article 170 provides criminal liability for the instigation against other nation, religion, ethnic or other kind group of people.

But… Lithuania was considered as xenophobic country in comparison with other countries in the Europe. 23 % of Lithuanians wouldn’t like to live next to Jewish 22.7 % wouldn’t like to live next to immigrants 80 % wouldn’t like their children to get married to foreigner.

Do You want to help stop racism? Join organizations dealing with issues of racism and human rights and encourage others Encourage dialogue on racism and human rights Object to racist jokes and insults!!!

We all are one human race!
