I A M P OEM

I am caring and loving. I wonder if I am reaching any of my students. I hear my name being called one hundred times a day. I want my students to stay away from drugs and gangs. I pretend that I can make a difference. I feel sad that they won’t all make it. I touch the sky with my imagination. I worry that some of my students will turn to drugs. I cry when I get frustrated. I am caring and loving. I understand that you can’t save everyone. I say that you can be anything you choose to be. I dream that I will reach them all. I try to be thankful and happy everyday. I hope that I will be lucky in my life. I am caring and loving. Brooke Cohen

M YSELF IN M ETAPHORS

If each stand of my hair was a star, my head is its own galaxy. My face is the globe where I live. My forehead is an open field, Where the furry animals of my eyebrows graze. My eyes are luminous bodies of water, reflecting the sun. My nose is like Mount Everest; I imagine climbing its peak, Building a fire on cold nights in the caverns of my nostrils. I admire the canyons of my ears, the slopes of my chin, my cheeks’ sands and tiny craters. I am stardust. I am my world, and of the world. J OSEPH O. L EGASPI M YSELF IN M ETAPHORS

List ten physical or mental traits about yourself. Compare each item on that list to something important in your life or that you love. Make sure that the comparison is threaded all the way through the poem. Using a sheet of paper to write the poem and illustrate it. M YSELF IN M ETAPHORS

If I were in charge of the world I'd cancel oatmeal, Monday mornings, Allergy shots, and also Sara Steinberg. If I were in charge of the world There'd be brighter nights lights, Healthier hamsters, and Basketball baskets forty eight inches lower. If I were in charge of the world You wouldn't have lonely. You wouldn't have clean. You wouldn't have bedtimes. Or "Don't punch your sister." You wouldn't even have sisters. If I were in charge of the world A chocolate sundae with whipped cream and nuts would be a vegetable All 007 movies would be G, And a person who sometimes forgot to brush, And sometimes forgot to flush, Would still be allowed to be In charge of the world. “I F I W ERE I N C HARGE OF THE W ORLD ” BY J UDITH V IORST
