November 14, Touching Spirit Bear - irony and sarcasm Ho mework D raw out your group's example of irony in Touching Spirit Bear and turn it into a COLORFUL hand drawn illustration. Le sson Essential Question W hat is irony and what are its different forms? Warm Up What do people mean when they say, "Isn't it ironic...?" Look up the definition for IRONY in the back of your Literature book and copy it into your notes.

3 COMMON TYPES OF IRONY Irony - t he contrast between what is expected and what actually exists or happens Verbal (spoken) Situational Dramatic

VERBAL th e contrast between what is said, and what is actually meant - SARCASM Example...your friend draws a really ugly picture and you say, "Nice work, Picasso."

SITUATIONAL - th e most common form of irony, the contrast between what happens and what was expected (or what would seem appropriate). Example...you save up for months to buy yourself something and then your parents end up getting it for your birthday. Let's take a look at some more examples....

1.If someone’s house burns down, you wouldn’t expect it to be a __________fireman________’s house. 2.If someone dies of a heart attack you wouldn’t expect it to be a __doctor__. 3.You wouldn’t expect a flood to occur in _____desert___. 4.You wouldn’t expect someone to starve to death in a _____grocery store 5.You wouldn’t expect a lifeguard to die by _____drowning____. 6.If someone’s child was failing every subject, you wouldn’t expect it to be _______teacher__________’s child.

What is ironic about this picture? Explain it in as much detail as you can.

DRAMATIC the con trast between what the character thinks to be true and what we, the reader or viewer, know to be true. Example...just about any cheesy horror movie. Why?

Underneath your answer, write the following title Ironic by Alanis Morissette We will now listen to the song by Alanis Morrissette entitled "Ironic." You can follow along with the lyrics on the SmartBoard or simply listen, but you need to pay attention to the lyrics.

An old man turned ninety-eight / He won the lottery and died the next day It's a black fly in your Chardonnay (a type of white wine) / It's a death row pardon two minutes too late Isn't it ironic... don't you think Chorus…It's like rain on your wedding day / It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take / Who would've thought... it figures Mr. Play-It-Safe was afraid to fly / He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye He waited his whole damn life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought, "well isn't this nice..."(sarcasm) And isn't it ironic... don't you think Repeat Chorus Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you when you think everything's okay and everything's going right And life has a funny way of helping you out when You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up in your face It's a traffic jam when you're already late / It's a no-smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife It's meeting the man of my dreams and then meeting his beautiful wife And isn't it ironic... don't you think A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think... Repeat Chorus Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out, helping you out(sarcasm)

Which example from the song do you think is the best example of irony? Which example do you think is the weakest? Identify the type of irony for each example and explain your choices.
