Hebrews – The conclusions of the matter

Three Themes to Summarize the Epistle: 1) Better Things Hebrews 8:6 – “But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.” 2) Endurance (Perseverance) and Encouragement Hebrews 10:36-39 – “For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise…we are not of those who draw back to destruction, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.” 3) Exhortation and Edification Hebrews 13:22 – “…bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written to you in few words.”

 Six Major Arguments (BETTER THINGS): 1. 1:1-4:16 | Jesus; Better than Angels, Prophets & Moses 2. 4:1-11 | Better Rest (Hope) 3. 4:14-8:5 | Better Priesthood of Christ 4. 8:6-9:22 | Jesus; Superior Mediator (High Priest) of a Better Covenant 5. 9:1-12 | Better Tabernacle 6. 9:7-10:31 | Jesus; Superior Sacrifice  Six Warnings: 1. 2:1-4 | Against Drifting (Do not neglect the Word) 2. 3:12-19 | Do not be hardened (calloused) by sin 3. 4:11-13 | Disobedience 4. 5:11-6:6 | Lack of Knowledge (Maturity) 5. 10:26-29 | Sinning Willfully 6. 12:14-29 | Do not Forsake the Eternal Kingdom

“Let us” is a phrase used by the author of Hebrews to draw a conclusion from the previous arguments discussed. Two implications: 1) A call to action; something to be done because of the previous argument. 2) The instructions are applicable to both the audience and the author.  Not “you do this,” but rather, WE will do this TOGETHER.

 Heb. 4:1 – “…fear”  Heb. 4:11 – “…diligent”  Heb. 12:1 – “…run with endurance”  Heb. 6:1 – “…go on to maturity”  Heb. 12:1 – “…lay aside every weight”

 Heb. 4:14; 10:23 – “…hold fast the confession”  Heb. 4:16 – “…come boldly to the throne” *  Heb. 10:19-22 – “…draw near”  Heb. 13:13 – “…go forth to Him”  1 Peter 4:12-16 (be not ashamed to suffer reproach as a Christian) * (Heb. 9:27-28; 7:25; 9:14; 10:39) * Grace comes through Christ : (Jn. 1:17; Rom. 1:5, 3:24; 1Cor. 1:4, 15:10; Gal. 1:6, 5:4; 2Jn. 1:3; Rev. 1:4-5, 22:21; Titus 2:11; 1Pt. 1:10-11; 2Thess. 1:12)

 Heb. 12:28 – “…have grace”  “have” – to fasten onto, hold to.  1 Peter 1:8-10 – “…receiving the end of your faith – the salvation of your souls. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you.”  Heb. 10:24 – “…consider one another”  Heb. 6:10-11

 Heb. 13:15 – “…offer the sacrifice of praise.”  Mindful of the matchless sacrifice given on our behalf and eternal redemption purchased (Heb. 9:12)  The rich promise of eternal rest (Heb. 4:9-11)  Having been translated into the “unshakeable kingdom” (Heb. 12:28)  Having a clean conscience toward God (Heb. 9:14) ▪ “I will be merciful and their sins I will remember no more.” (Heb. 8:12)  “He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him…” (Jesus) – (Heb. 7:25)  He is the “author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” (Heb. 5:9) We are those who have faith to the saving of the soul. (Heb. 10:39)
