Curiosity Curiosity is one of the great secrets of happiness. Bryant H. McGill Curiosity is one of the great secrets of happiness. Bryant H. McGill Some advice: keep the flame of curiosity and wonderment alive, even when studying for boring exams. That is the well from which we scientists draw our nourishment and energy. And also, learn the math. Math is the language of nature, so we have to learn this language. Attitude you believe that you can grow intellectually – growth mind set You believe that you can learn anything, including math. You resolve the issue of “when will I use this” that is so common in math classes. The whole is greater than the some of its parts This question is a roadblock to learning and a self-fulfilling prophecy You certainly can’t use it if you don’t learn it Trust the people with experience who created a program Be determined to work hard – daily – productive persistence Take ownership of your learning

Question 5 12 x 17 =

System 1 and 2 System 1 – operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. Automaticity (Questions 1 and 3) System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations. (Questions 2,4,5)

Automaticity Math Fact Fluency Why is it important – video

Math Anxiety A fight or flight physical response that causes the brain to shut down. Practice taking tests. If you can’t solve a problem on your own with no help around, then you don’t really understand the concept and that will show up when you take the exam

Outside-of-classroom Time– it isn’t only about doing the homework Struggle time Curiosity time Recognize the big picture and patterns. Redo homework

Help ADS office – take care of this at the very beginning of the quarter. Tutoring Effective use of tutoring – only seek help with problems you have tried and could not get. Letting tutors guide you through all your homework leaves you with the illusion you understand but no confidence on the exams. Study groups Not everything your study partners tell you is true, but each thing they tell you could be. Professor’s office A professor can help you one-on-one in a way they can’t help you when there are 30 other students around.
