AWG Mission Statement “The Association for Women Geoscientists exists to promote the professional development of its members, to provide geoscience outreach to girls, and to encourage women to become geoscientists.”

Strategic Goals Become the focal organization for assisting employment offices in complying with Affirmative Action regulations by putting AWG forward as the principle instrument for reaching women geoscientists Promote the professional development of our members by promoting women in the profession, by nominating them for key professional positions and awards, by providing leadership opportunities, resume writing guidance and review, an up-to-date directory, field trips, information on issues of interest to professional women, electronic and print announcements of job opportunities, & employment possibilities through partnerships with other organizations.

Strategic Goals Educate members on current public issues that impact the geosciences &/or women in the geosciences, then take an educated and public stand on these issues. Encourage women of all ages to become scientifically curious and to become geoscientists by actively working with them in the field, particularly in partnership with schools, science fairs, Girl Scouts, and other appropriate organizations. Enhance the image of women geoscientists in society by interacting with the general public on geoscience topics and issues through local, regional, national or international programs, venues, and governments.

Who can join? Membership is open to all who support AWG's goals. Our members include professional women and men from industry, government, museums and academia, students from a cross-section of colleges and universities, retirees, and many others.

Organizational History Founded in San Francisco in 1977 to encourage women involvement in the geosciences, a career choice where they were largely underrepresented at the time. Today, AWG membership ~1,000, which reflects the increasing participation of women in the geosciences. AWG is a 501(c)(6) mutual benefit corporation with local chapters & At-Large members throughout the U.S. and around the world. The AWG Foundation was established in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation to provide support for AWG educational programs.

Organizational Structure AWG is managed: –on a national level by a Board of Directors consisting of: President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, Editor, Past-President, Regional Delegates –On a local level by Chapters and At-large members

Programs/Scholarships Chrysalis Scholarship Minority Program AWG Distinguished Lecturer Program

Chrysalis Scholarship Fund Award Amount: $2,000 annually The Chrysalis Scholarship provides degree- completion funding for two women geoscience graduate students whose education has been interrupted for at least one year. The applicant must be a student who will contribute to both the geosciences and the larger world community through her academic and personal strengths.

AWG Distinguished Lecturer Program Award Amount: $800 The AWG Distinguished Lecturer Program provides a list of distinguished female geoscientists available to give presentations on their specialty areas. Persons interested in hosting a speaker must contact the speaker directly. Departments and organizations can receive up to $800 per year toward speaker expenses.

Minority Scholarship Award Amount: $5,000 This scholarship encourages young minority women to pursue an education and later a career in the geosciences. It provides financial aid and matches the student with a mentor in the same field who will offer guidance and support.
