I Came, I Saw, I Rubric-ed: Conquering Grading Learning College Conference 2009 Jeanne Ann Graham

A Rubric is: A. an assessment tool used to measure students’ work B. a scoring guide used to evaluate performance C. in theology, an outline or plan of action D. a tool for grading curriculum-based tasks E. all of the above

Using a rubric will: A. make expectations clear B. provide informative feedback C. support learning D. make grading easier E. support skill development F. encourage students to think critically G. all of the above

You May Need A Rubric: If students frequently ask how you “got” their grade. If complex assignments are often completed incorrectly. If you grade the last project and aren’t sure your grading has been consistent. If your desk is buried under piles of student projects waiting to be graded.

To Create a Rubric: Determine the concepts to be taught. What are the essential learning objectives? Choose the criteria to be evaluated. Name the evidence to be produced.

Creating cont’d Develop a grid.

Rubric Grid Beginning 1 Developing 2 Accomplished 3 Exemplary 4 Score Stated Objective or performance Des. of identifiable performance characteristics reflecting a beginning level of performance Development and movement toward… Reflecting mastery of performance Reflecting the highest level of performance Stated Objective or performance

Creating cont’d Share the rubric with students before they begin the project. Evaluate the end product. Compare students' work with the rubric to determine whether they have mastered the content.
