To meet the ever increasing needs of the experiments, CERN needs to augment the resources available in its own Data Centre. Furthermore, the addition of a remote centre allows CERN to implement critical services at both sites, allowing to provide these services even in the case of a major incident at one or other of the sites.

The Wigner Data Centre was chosen after a tender open to all 20 CERN Member States. 17 responses were received from 9 different countries. The Wigner Data Centre bid was evaluated to be the most competitive compliant offer. The contract was adjudicated by CERN in favour of the Wigner Data Centre in March CERN Open Days

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t How is it Operated? The Wigner Data Centre is being operated as a logical extension of the CERN Data Centre. The servers belong to CERN and are being operated by CERN. All software installation, configuration and monitoring is being done remotely from CERN. The Data Centre facilities are being operated by Wigner. The Wigner Data Centre staff are responsible for physical installation and repairs. CERN Open Days

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Genève 23 Switzerland t What is its Capacity? Currently the installed capacity at the Wigner Data Centre is a bit less than 10% of that installed at CERN. Over the potential 7 year contract, the installed capacity at the Wigner Data Centre will be gradually increased to a level similar to that of the CERN Data Centre. The majority of the capacity will be used for physics data processing with about 15% of the capacity used for critical services and business continuity purposes. CERN Open Days
