By: Rebekah Greenspan and Lexi Smith CAN CHALLENGE
1.Build the insulator 2.Pour hot water into the can and seal the top with your lid 3.Stick the thermometer through the lid into the can so it touches the bottom of the can. 4.Place the insulator in a plastic bag, then, the whole thing into a bucket of ice water 5.Monitor the temperature for 20 minutes. 6.Calculate the loss of temperature of your insulator WHAT IS THE CAN CHALLENGE?
OUR OBJECTIVE Our objective was to apply our knowledge of heat and energy transfer to evaluate different materials and construct an insulator for a regular sized soda can filled with hot water.
WHAT ARE INSULATORS? Insulators are materials whose atoms have tightly bound electrons. These atoms are not free to roam around and transfer energy to other atoms.
WHAT IS HEAT Heat is thermal energy moving from a warmer object to a cooler one and thermal energy is the total energy in an objects particles
Radiation: Convection: Conduction: TYPES OF HEAT TRANSFER
WHAT WE USED Rubber Glove Cotton
WHAT WE USED Styrofoam Foil:
WHAT WE USED Wool Sock: Can (355ml) Duct tape:
CONTAINER 10cm x 10cm x 20cm
PROCEDURE 1. Stuff wool sock in bottom of container
PROCEDURE 2. Place cotton and foil in bottom of glove 3. Place the glove inside the insulator
PROCEDURE 4. Place the can in the glove
1 ST TEST OF INSULATOR
WHAT WAS WRONG? We noticed a lot of heat was escaping from the top of the box
WHAT DID WE DO? We added extra padding for the lid with layers of foam, cork, and felt
SECOND TIME TRIAL
FINAL RESULTS OF THE CAN CHALLENGE
WHY DID IT WORK? The materials we used minimized heat transfer
WHAT WOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER? Thinner Styrofoam
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS What would happen if we used our insulator in reverse?
THANKS FOR WATCHING!
