Harper’s First Rodeo By: Heather Branson Oklahoma State University 2006

. Harper, the horse, had a big day coming soon. It was his first real rodeo. But Harper wasn’t prepared. He had been cooped up in his stall and wanted out. Harper began to kick and run around.

Cowboy Gill came to the barn to check out all the noise. It was Harper, jumping and kicking! Cowboy Gill put Harper in the field, and things got worse.

Harper was kicking and making all kinds of noise. Then, all of a sudden, something happened! He accidentally kicked the fence and hurt his leg. Cowboy Gill was so mad!

The rodeo was coming soon, and Cowboy Gill didn’t think Harper would be ready. Cowboy Gill didn’t know what to do.

He decided to exercise Harper and see if he was getting better. He walked and rode Harper little by little. After a few days Hardee got stronger and felt better. He was finally ready for the big day!

It was the day of the rodeo, and Harper was ready. The crowd was cheering, and the steers were in the chute. Cowboy Gill nodded to the gate person, and they were off. Harper was so excited and felt better that he helped Cowboy Gill catch the steer.

When Harper received the 1 st place blue ribbon, he couldn’t wait for the next rodeo!
