WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?

GROUP ACTIVITY 1) What is TECHNOLOGY? Give a definition of it. Before starting any theoretical explanation I would like you to think of the following questions: 1) What is TECHNOLOGY? Give a definition of it. 2) What is in your opinion the difference between technology and science? 3) In general, what does technology do for us? 4) Look around the classroom. What technologies do you see? 5) What technologies do you have at home? 6) How do these technologies solve problems and make your lives easier?

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? It is the application of knowledge to the practical aims of human life or to changing and manipulating the human environment. Technology includes the use of materials, tools, techniques, and sources of power to make life easier or more pleasant and work more productive. We apply technology in almost everything we do in our lives, we use technology at work, we use it to extract materials, we use technology for communication, transportation, learning, manufacturing, creating artifacts, securing data and so much more.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY? Whereas science is concerned with how and why things happen, technology focuses on making things happen. Technology is also an application of science to solve a problem. But what you have to know is that technology and science are different subjects which work hand-in-hand to accomplish a specific task or solve a particular problem. The two are related and are very intertwined in our modern world, but they are also distinct in terms of their goals. As humans, we use both technology and science together, that is why we confuse these two to be the same. Science is knowledge of the natural world while technology is human-made world determined by processing, development and management.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY? MOTTO Science is knowing. Technology is doing. MISSION The search for and theorizing about cause. The search for and theorizing about new processes. EVALUATION METHODS Analysis, generalization and creation of theories. Analysis and synthesis of design. FOCUS Focuses on understanding natural phenomena. focuses on understanding the made environment. DEVELOPMENT METHODS Discovery (controlled by experimentation). Design, invention, production. MOST OBSERVED QUALITY Drawing correct conclusions based on good theories and accurate data. Taking good decisions based on incomplete data and approximate models. SKILLS NEEDED TO EXCEL Experimental and logical skills needed. Design, construction, testing, planning, quality assurance, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal and communication skills.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

WHAT CAN TECHNOLOGY DO FOR US?

WHAT CAN TECHNOLOGY DO FOR US? Technology is one of the main ways we change the world. Whether it’s a complex technology like the internet, or simple technology like the wheel, one of the basic elements of human civilization is that we use technology. But it’s not a one-way street. The moment a new technology is born, it also has an effect on us. Our lives change as a result of our technologies— they may become longer, healthier, and more productive; they may also become more anxious, self-centered, and destructive. Technology may help us stay more connected with the people we love, but it also enables us to stay more connected with our work. It’s not so much a question of whether we govern our technology or our technology governs us; it’s more a recognition that our relationship with technology, and with other human beings and the planet through technology, is complicated.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TECHNOLOGY Technology is good because it simplifies the way we do things in our daily lives, however, if technology is wrongly applied, it can be harmful in so many ways. Technology is developed by humans, so we can use it to accomplish almost every task; it makes the impossible look possible.    Easy access to information. Innovation and creativity. Better communication. Convenience of travelling. Better housing and lifestyle. Entertainment. Efficiency and productivity. Convenience in education. Changed health industry.   Increased loneliness. Job loss. Competency. World destruction weapons.

TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY Types of technology We use technology to accomplish various tasks, so technology comes in different types: information technology, communication technology, bio-related and agriculture technology, medical, environmental, manufacturing and construction, transportation, energy and power, nanotechnology.
