Draw your family as a stick figures… How do you tell them apart???

Begin Teaching when child starts ASKING ???? “Why are you getting so fat?” “Why doesn’t Missy have one mommy?” “Why do you have boobs that are bigger than daddy’s?”

USE CORRECT TERMINOLOGY ! NEVER use Slang words! Hot dog / Penis The baby is growing in the mothers uterus. It is a special place that babies grow in. Boys do not have a uterus, but they do have a penis.

ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH! Children can tell when you are lying to them. Lies can make TRUST vanish later.

If child has not asked by age 6….Find a way to! It is MUCH easier to teach while young. (teens have hormones and easily embarrassed). Sexuality is not limited to talking about the act of SEX. (this is why many parents are uncomfortable with sharing or teaching information.) Changes with age. You use more terms as children get older and are able to understand deeper thinking.

Answer only the questions children ASK and in TERMS they can UNDERSTAND Example: a 5 yr. old asks where babies come from. Answer: the baby grows in a mothers uterus. Baby begins as an egg call from mommy and a sperm cell from daddy join together. THE CHILD IS NOT ASKING: HOW THE SPERM GOT INTO THE MOTHER’S BODY, OR HOW PEOPLE HAVE SEX

When they do ask: this is how you may answer: It is a very special way that moms and dads have of showing their love for each other. They kiss one another and share their love. The dad’s penis goes into the mothers vagina and the sperm are then put into the mothers body. The sperm and egg join together in the fallopian tube and begin to grow a baby. The depth of their understanding and the information that you share depends on the age of the child.

Explain Your Moral Standpoint as Part of Every Discussion! This is a sensitive topic. ONLY talk to YOUR family. Ask a child, What do you think will happen if a baby did not have both a mother and father?

Remember Children are Naturally Curious Answer questions in a calm and Mater-of-fact way. Explain about modesty and manners Boys do not dress in front of girls and nice-versa Do not put your adult experiences and understanding into their questions! DON”T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS. “Where do you think you came from?” “oh Jimmy said he came from Kansas.”

Remember Children are Naturally Curious If you answer a question for another persons child, tell the child’s parent. PROTECT YOUR SELF! Always Always Always focus on the positive aspects of being either female or male.

Focus on the positive! After explaining the joy of being a mother and the pain of childbirth, one little boy nudged his brother and said, “I am glad I am not a girl!”

The mother replied, “Well, you don’t ever have to feel the pain of having a baby, but you don’t ever get to feel a baby inside your body. Girls and boys both have special things about them, and they both have something's that may not be so fun. BUT, both boys and girls are NECESSARY!”
