The Story Behind the Surabayan Batik Long ago, the motif of batik clothing in Surabaya had only polka dots. Then it became extinct. After that, people used batik from other cities. Today, people ask, why doesn’t Surabaya have its own batik?

History of Surabayan Batik Surabaya doesn’t have an original history of batik. Lots of people in Surabaya like to make batik. Our guest Ms Putu S, she makes lots of batik. She makes the motif from Surabaya.

History of Surabayan Batik Batik in Surabaya began around the 18 th century. They used canting, a wax pen. In the beginning of the 20 th century. The well-known stamp was used. The white cloth was hand- made. The material is colored with plants such as Mengkudu tree, high soga and the salt is made from mud.

Special Characteristics of Surabayan Batik The concept of the color is strong and brave like the picture of Surabayanese people that is brave and strong. Because in the war between Dutch, Surabaya people were really brave and strong during that time. The colors are like dark red, dark purple, and blue.
