The foolishness of Man and the Sovereignty of God

1 Samuel 4-7 Man makes plans, has hopes and dreams, has expectations, and if not truly led of the Lord, those will all fail God’s plans are flawless (Pr 19:21, Jer 29:11, Ps 139:13-18)

Israel’s Mistakes The Word of the Lord has returned to Israel through the prophet Samuel The Philistines beat down Israel, so the elders of Israel came up with a plan The ark is stolen by the Philistines, Eli’s sons are killed, and Eli dies from the news

The Philistines Mistakes They decide the ark will make a great trophy to add to their own idol worship of Dagon God sends a small message of His displeasure God sends a larger message of His displeasure Ashdod get tumors, Gath gets tumors, Ekron gets tumors, and in the Vulgate, get rats too The Philistines presented an offering of 5 golden tumors and a huge pile of golden rats

Beth Shemesh’s Mistakes The cows show up in some guy named Joshua’s field, they presented an offering to the Lord They peeked in the ark More fell in Beth Shemesh (50,070 men) than the battle with the Philistines The ark is moved to Kirjath Jearim. God’s wrath was removed

So what have we learned? Had Israel inquired of the Lord, they would not have gone up to battle with the Philistines Had Eli’s sons not agreed to use the ark in a way opposing God’s design, they would have just died another way (they were evil) Had the Philistines respected the ark, they would not have gotten tumors and rats Had Beth Shemesh not peeked, they would have lived

How do we apply this? People use the term “led of the Lord” at times to justify their own plans (just ask Saul in 1 Sam 13:12) God gradually increases the correction until we get back on the right path When we get over our own plans and submit to God’s, the path is clear, smooth, and joyful.
